| The fall of the Parramatta Rugby League dynasty has been many years in the making – they last won a premiership in 1986 – their 4th and all since their first in 1981.
It was the era of Jack Gibson, Stirling, Price, Kenny, Cronin, Groth, Ella, and many other Eels legends – it is the only era Eels fans have had to cheer about. Ever since they have been a Club trying to recapture those glory days and their fans have been kept waited a long time. The most recent history of the manic coach musical chairs sees Ricky Stuart sitting in the job. When his time is done it will be proven that Parramatta are a Club without a soul, without a heartbeat, a club where the rudder of Leadership is a bankrupt and left meandering in an abyss where the fans keep showing up, the players keep turning up, but the outcome stays the same. As an outsider it is easy to see all this – my friend as an insider defends the Club to the hilt and blindly trusts his judgement as a fan to believe Ricky Stuart is the answer. It is a crime to even try to tear down his belief. When a racehorse fails to do what is expected who do the punters blame – it is never the horses fault – it is always the Trainer, the jockey, or just plain bad luck in running – it is never the horses fault. Then why is it in the human world of sport and the Parramatta League team in particular, where a 3 and 17 win loss record is not the trainer/coach/owners fault – it is the player rosters fault? Parramatta’s defining crisis point will come mid way through the 2014 season when all Parramatta fans realise that Ricky Stuart is the problem. What will they do then? The new player roster Ricky Stuart has promised will be weaker than this season – firstly – who will he attract to the club – money players at best and we all now how that works in professional football. How Parramatta can be so stupid to allow Stuart to lead the Club down a path that will tear the heart and soul from the club is something only the Club can answer. Returning to the Coach musical chair appointments see the are list below –
… can anyone remember the anguish the club went through with each of these appointments? Then a few years back many though a change of Administration was the answer when Fitzgerald was dumped after decades of service – did that solve the problem – where is Paul Orchard now? Lets recap Ricky Stuart’s credentials – Stuart won an NRL premiership in 2002 when in his first year as head coach of Easts – we all know that he was hand-held throughout the season by Phil Gould and Graham Murray – in the next three seasons when he flew solo he saw the Roosters make successive Grand finals and lose – and then in 2006 he was booted from the club – all the while his player pool was of high quality. Stuart’s Club Coaching performance can be viewed further using this source link: [sourced from Wikipedia.] During the 2011-2012 period he was a NSW appointed State Of Origin head Coach and was appointed so because NSW felt that the rigors of a NRL Coach coaching the SOO team was too much. Stuart’s State of Origin performance history is displayed in first table above – coached 9, won 4 and lost 5, with a series win in 2005 – the last time NSW won a SOO series. For Parramatta fans and Administrators to have placed the Club’s survival prospects in the hands of Ricky Stuart it is an almighty gamble. At Test level we all remember losing the WOrld Cup and Stuart going on a rant about the referee that is his living legacy. I asked a question of the Parramatta fans – ‘do you not think that if the players were getting the job done the Club would be better off?’ A stupid Q&A scenario – of course on field success brings contentment within the Club. But Parramatta fans have gone past this point – now it is the thought of on-field success at some point in the future that brings contentment. If Parramatta’s problems have not been solved with a revolving coach policy, how do they think they will succeed with a revolving player policy? WIth their recent performance history as the only incentive to attract players – who do they think will get to come and play at Parramatta – let alone under a Coach like Stuart who thinks the current player roster can’t get the job done – walking this player dump walk is inviting players to be judged based on a Coach’s ability to win games. Stuart’s record over his whole coaching career is not that great – how do Parramatta fans think he will change that around? Stuart strikes all as someone who has anger issues – his emotive sideline antics has a two-sided impact – we all see his passion and him wearing his heart on his sleeve – but so do the players. Again we all remember his post match antics when he lost the World Cup – Australia losing to NZ in Australia – Wayne Bennett helped coach that NZ side with Stephen Kearney – in fact that Kearney performance and his Assistant Coach record with the Storm under Bellamy, was the reason Parramatta gave Kearney two years coaching at Parramatta. Stuart has come after Kearney and now in his 1st season he has three wins from 18 matches and his answer is to dump half the 1st grade player roster and the Club supports him in the action. Poor … Poor … Parramatta … Blind Freddie can see that the problem the players have on the field comes from the Coach and the Administration’s desperation … why should the players put their bodies on the line when all they see is a Club self-destructing. Players can read the signs, and it is they who go out there and get booed by the fans every week for their performances. All on behalf of the real failures – the Coach and the Club Administrators. It’s time for the fans to get real, wake up and take back their club. The ‘dreamland’ the fans live in is all a part of the fracture that is the Parramatta Rugby League Club … an example – Chris Sandow – a Souths reject picked up by Parramatta for $500+ when any league fan could see he was a dud … even my friend who supported the buy initially has come on bended knee and acknowledged that he can’t play and it was a bad buy. No – Parramatta will agin own the wooden spoon and in the next season when Stuart has promised all – they will again be favourites to run last. Poor … Poor … Parramatta … Stuart leaves his mark – look where Cronulla are now – and how long did it take Easts to again be a competitive force in the competition. Ricky Stuart is no supercoach – in fact this blogger thinks he should just bow out of the game and learn to deal with his anger issues. Perhaps when he has learnt some humility and wants to give back to the game, he should try coaching some kids where he can let the players teach him about respect and a true coach’s role in getting the best out of players. Stuart has to learn how to give rather than take from the game … that is his story.

| Again the SOO Game 3 decider contest was true, fierce, and absorbing … some two weeks after the event the glow of victory still brings a smile and want to shout the ‘Queenslander’ match cry.
On the night NSW looked would be winners with possession and the tiring QLD forward pack. Yet the scoreboard did not favour them in the end result. The immediate post match questions are mountainous – so too with the benefit of time lapsed to consider the efforts of both teams. In both scenarios it comes down to one thing – what was missing from the NSW effort to get them over the line? Too have had that much ball possession in the 20 minutes prior to half-time, and then again in the last 20 minutes of the 2nd half and not be able to post a winning score, points to greater issues other than the efforts and committment the players left on the field. Gallen and Hayne missed Game 3 – would they have made the difference if they played? We’ll never know but they have not been the difference in the past in terms of NSW winning a decider. During post match interviews the word being used by NSW coaches and players was ‘clinical’ or lack of – to that I say ‘composure’ and ‘self-belief’ are better points of reference … NSW on the back-end of an 8 year drought have already written off next year because QLD host two games in 2014 – already NSW are displaying that defeatist attitude and that is the problem every NSW player has never tasted SOO victory and some have been there for many of the 8 years of losses. Whilst the crowds and the TV audience are posting new records every season – and the games themselves thrill the audience with their intensity and brutality – continued excuses for NSW losses only avoid the cold hard truth and that truth comes in many forms. Phil Gould’s interview shown pre-match with Smith, Kronk, Thurston and Slater tells much of the story – this group of players have been together since junior league learning and feeding off each other all their league careers. Bonds like that can never be forged – this is truly a QLD side of which legends are made from. Gordon Tallis made the comment in the pre-match build-up –
Never has a comment proved so poetic as Game 3 played itself out. QLD were gone in the back-end of both halves – be it the aging QLD team, the mystifying mistakes they make – or the 50-50 ref calls all going NSW’s way – NSW had enough ball to win this game thrice over … Yet their failure to get the job done given all the positives they had to work with – the failure to post points comes down to the options taken by the halves. During that last 10 minutes when NSW drew themselves to a 12-10 score line – every QLD’er watching had fear in their mind as they believed NSW would run over the top and end the winning streak. If NSW coach Daly was honest he would tell all they he also believed NSW would win the game from that position – the game was there to be won and yet again NSW found a way to lose … QLD did not win this game – NSW lost it. Gould would have believed in the NSW victory as well – but he knew as he has known all along – NSW don’t have what QLD have – the ability to turn adversity, the ability to weather the momentum shifts, the story is that as much as the hype demands NSW are in the contest – NSW have forgotten how to win important games. The myth that QLD’s have greater ‘ticker’, greater ‘belief’, and greater ‘composure’ lives on and was proved once again. Those north of the border say it every year in the wash-up – NSW can’t match QLD for heart and soul – and the NSW team Management say otherwise – but the truth is that every Queenslander knows that beating NSW in SOO is a blood sport that cannot be underestimated. QLD’s believe in the symbolism of SOO victories and when defeat comes – all QLD will feel a sense of loss that will have no bounds. This is what QLD players feel and play for – a responsibility worn as proudly and all those who have gone before. NSW don’t have this inner soul that comprehends – they had it once under Gould, and during the 90’s – but these recent teams have not come near what those teams showed on the field in terms of heart and soul. It can all be traced back to the biggest winning margin in Origin history – NSW crushed QLD when they posted more than 50 points in the year before the winning streak began. The NSW player antics in post try celebrations will live in QLD memory forever. Those dark days in QLD SOO history is what drives the coaches, the players, and the QLD supporters – never again … NSW don’t get it – in that contest they disrespected the game and the contest – they now deserve their humiliation in 8 series losses – never once has QLD disrespected the NSW efforts or the team players in those victories. QLD has class – and when NSW understand that their losing streak is based on their biggest victory – perhaps they might get some understanding where the QLD spirit comes from. Another reality is NSW play as individuals – they claim to have the will and the determination, and at this level there is nothing special about that commitment – it is about how far they will go as a team and as individuals to spend themselves physically, and emotionally on the field. Of course ability and insight to the game is just as important and that comes down to individual player ability – QLD’s dominance comes down to their halves combination over many years. In Pearce NSW have committed themselves for four series now and he has demonstrated from a QLD perspective that he is the weak link – Soward, Carney, and now Maloney – have been his five-eight combinations and they have come and gone and Pearce still remains. Look to Pearce’s club form and measure the stats for the re-starts he gets when in the opposition 22 – his conversion rate is the worst in the league – how can NSW selectors think that at the SOO level his record would improve or get any better? I believed NSW had the forward pack to dominate the aging and smaller QLD pack in this series – Game 1 proved that. Game 2 they went walkabout – and Game 3 they again stood up and were the better pack on the field. As a team the NSW halves just don’t make it work and QLD love to see Pearce at half – they see it as a choice that favours them. Can QLD make it 10 in a row – the odds have shortened and where can NSW go to get the players needed that are not mentally scarred? Well done QLD – suck it up NSW and in the next year try to be humble as you contemplate the enormity of QLD’s efforts.

| In the last week, much has unfolded. Simon Crean has announced his retirement, so has Greg Combet, Stephen Smith has taken as respectable a retirement as circumstances will allow. Federal ALP has intervened in the NSW State branch. Dead wood is being pruned. Backyard blitz takes on a new meaning.
The makeover is starting to take shape. Tony Burke attempted to resign, and his resignation was not accepted. Tanya Plibersek is still Minister for Health. Jenny Macklin is still there and ministerial positions are musical chairs (deck chairs on the Titanic). Can these weeds be realistically controlled or made useful? What really matters is policy, and why do we forgive them now? They created this mess so why should we believe they will really fix it, can fix it. For a start, this parliament has only run it’s course through the support of amongst others Craig Thomson. Had Thomson been forced to vacate his seat 18 months ago at a by election Dobell would have gone Coalition. Therefore Tony Abbott would be PM today. Windsor and Oakeshott both former Nationals but now independent have played their part. They are both not contesting their seats and that means a notional 76 (tiny majority) to Coalition as things stand. Then comes the question why did Rudd not challenge sooner? If Rudd had have stood last March, he would have had 3 months more to turn things around. As policies change, why did he leave it until there was no apparent parliamentary sittings to debate these shifts in policy. It is left to journalists to get admissions of culpability over matters like the shift in immigration? Why is Rudd scared of the opposition on the parliamentary floor? He keeps taunting Abbott with debate me on Prime Time TV. Abbott is saying I won’t play the game. But at some stage he needs to play the game. He needs to give the electorate time to develop belief in the team he leads. To find any rationality in all that is now upon us we have to go back further in recent history. Exactly how Rudd was overthrown in June 2010 and what were the real motives and who were the real players? When Rudd and Gillard first came together as a leadership team, both were considered young and neither more chance. Rudd was prepared to serve under Gillard but Rudd was the better spokesperson. The ALP was desperate to end the Howard reign. Rudd had no factional allegiances, and Gillard was all things to all people. Rudd due to his diplomatic background won over. Roll on to November 2007, they did the unbelievable, they won. Queensland turned a narrow victory into a massive one because for the 1st time there was a Qld Prime Minister. A golden period ensued. Costello retired. Howard was defeated in his own seat. Some was attributable to Workchoices other decisions were just human frailty. Brendan Nelson was anointed Liberal leader. He said he would have a go. There was no heir apparent beyond Costello. There was Kyoto and Sorry and Rudd was walking on water, metaphorically. Nelson called a leadership contest, he was happy to get out. The Liberal party’s electoral stocks were atrocious. The leadership was given to Turnbull. He wasn’t ready. Then came Godwin Grech and Utegate. Turnbull had no traction. Then came Carbon Tax and Copenhagen. Abbott took over, in a contest that included Hockey. The Liberal party was happy with 2nd best. After Copenhagen Rudd was petulant. He spat the dummy. The fools got in the way. Rudd dropped Carbon Tax cold and switched to a mining super profits tax. Some virtual unknown announced the coup on ABC TV by the name of Paul Howes, of the AWU. By the time that was decided Rudd was the first 1st term prime minister knifed by his own party. Gillard spoke of a good government who had lost their way. Australia was in shock. Leaks were everywhere. All scuttlebutt. What was the truth? Arbib according to Wikileaks had been informing Washington what was really happening. Shorten and Howes were spokespersons. Richardson claimed a part, and implicated the Victorian right. All was based on gossip and leaks. The ALP went ever so close to losing the unlosable election. Gillard formed a minority government. Abbott had brought the Coalition back from the grave. Gillard show her real chameleon persona, she was simply do what it takes. In her words “the Little Doer” in public perception, power is everything. Australia gave her a very good go. Abbott acted as if he was just waiting for government to fall to the Coalition. The broken promise on Carbon Tax was just the beginning. The Coalition played it like a broken record. The shambles that parlayed from there on in was just too hard to believe. HSU, Slipper, more broken promises, parliamentary salary increases, a budget surplus set in stone, oops an $18bn deficit, Eddie Obeid. When it was first announced on Christmas Eve that the guaranteed surplus was abandoned, because jobs matter, the death knoll had rung for the last time. Maybe not, maybe it was the NSW ICAC enquiries into Tripodi, Obeid and McDonald. Nothing will save the Gillard government. Don’t put away that gong too fast. The death knolls just get louder. By the May Budget there was a massive disconnect. Coming from Caucus was this nonsense of a j curve. Sell our positive agenda, harp on about the Coalition negative agenda. But no one is listening. The ALP needed desperately a circuit breaker. The only one was Rudd. Rudd the Dud according to prominent front benchers. They lined up to tell us what a dud he was in 2012. Those who spoke most freely and at length are all gone now. Those that spoke less candidly, knowing how foolish they looked, have survived, just. Gillard had to find a way out, the ALP had to find a face saving exit. Shorten switches to the Rudd forces. Was Rudd guaranteed an open mandate to fix the underlying issues? Please be clear on what issues. We now wait. Intervention in NSW ALP. ASIC claims the banks are gauging on term deposit rollover rates. Hang on ASIC is a government agency but they have been silent for far too many years on the banks not passing on full interest rate cuts. Why is that pitched at the retiree sector rather than the mortgagee belt? Where is Glenn Stevens and the RBA or APRA. Oh investments! Australian Securities and Investments Commission! So Rudd has got a friend, one at ASIC. Rudd does a flying visit to Indonesia. Carbon tax moving to Emissions Trading System. Nothing is firm, not even the election date. Wow this is much more the opening lines of Macbeth than Act V Scene II. Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble. Eye of newt & and toe of frog, Wool of bat, and tongue of dog, Adder’s fork, and blind-worm’s sting, Lizard’s leg, and howlet’s wing, For a charm of powerful trouble, Like a hell-broth boil and bubble. Double, double, toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble. [Macbeth Act I] What is left? A 2nd string (journey man) Coalition leader. One that is easily labelled negative, and having little by way of policy. A closer run race where confusion reigns. He though he was MacDuff, but it was always Rudd, the understudy who was going to play the part. Where and How will the ALP secure not only seats to counter New England and Lyne, but hold Dobell and Robertson and many many more. I can now believe that some seats like Kingsford Smith will be a stronger majority to the ALP. Garrett has gone. But winning 5 seats is different. Safe seats like Batman or Lalor, Melbourne or maybe even Denison don’t change the scenario. They won’t. They can’t. What will happen is that the Coalition will form government and be on the back foot from day 1. The Greens will struggle to win a senate seat but will still be the balance of power in the Upper House. Going for a double dissolution will not achieve anything. They might well lose the lot. Opposition leader Rudd could well be in a position to take back the government benches. No initiative allowing them to expunge the Carbon Tax will be possible. Only waiting until 2016 will see the Greens finished. It will be very difficult for the Coalition to make any significant difference. The best thing about Shakespeare is that it does have an ending. How surreal! Believing in sanity is indeed insanity. |

hile the dogs may have been called off on Wednesday and tethered or kennelled on Wednesday night, newly installed PM Rudd would do very well to remember what he has been forced to endure during his hiatus. On Yom Kippur; Those of the Jewish faith, rarely vote in person on polling day at a polling station. Saturday is their Sabbath. They can and do vote postal, or pre poll. Postal and pre poll numbers grow at every election. In this modern era of communication most people do not understand why voting takes place only on the Saturday, and do not understand why fines are issued when you fail to vote. Many believe getting your name marked off and going to a cardboard screen and using a blunt pencil to mark a valid voting paper is not just archaic it is beyond pre historic. There are so many diverse opinions, it is hard to condense, but those of the Jewish faith routinely vote pre poll or postal. So do many others. The AEC makes extraordinary accommodations to attempt to uphold compulsory voting. You might find the occasional officer who takes himself just a little too seriously. For every one of those you will also find one equally lackadaisical. The real reason you intend to re address September 14 as polling day is because you intend to get as much mileage from G20 in Moscow on September 7th as is possible, and ideally you would return from Moscow to conduct the official launch of the ALP election launch thereafter. Nothing has changed. On September 21 football finals are at fever pitch. September 28 is worse. On October 5th you not only encounter football finals (NRL) but long weekend in NSW (Labour Day) and Sydney spring carnival horse racing. Any date after that means the scheduled sitting of Parliament in late August will proceed due to the fact that the electoral writs have not been issued. This comes back to going to the polls in August. The electoral writs need 32 (or 33) days. You want to be in Moscow on September 7th and not let Tony Abbott have that honour. If you go in August can you guarantee that? August 3rd means you need to dissolve parliament by July 1st. By Monday you will not be ready. How many weeks do you need to get ready? Hmmm? We are watching you clearly. We know you and the way you work. On Electricity, Gas, GST and Carbon Tax. David Murray said the Carbon Tax was an extremely inefficient tax. I cite him as a respected business leader. I absolutely agree. Too many have forgotten, that GST was applied to electricity and gas in 2001 while not on water and other domestic services such as rates to address the concept of externalities (pollution). No steps were taken at that time with those revenues to force cleaner energy. GST applies to domestic and commercial vehicles. In petrol there is double edged sword in the petrol excise. A small part of domestic budget stress comes from electricity and gas prices. There are other factors. It also manifests in industrial competitiveness. There should be a proper rationalisation. Tony Abbott has promised to not only remove the carbon tax, but have a white paper on tax reform, and move Deregulation out of Finance and put it into Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. To say that the coalition does not have clearly elucidated policies is a furphy. It is more than that, it borders on contempt. We are sick and tired of being told what to think. On the Australian Dollar; The very core of this issue is the inflation target of the RBA. It is always in the too hard basket. In the SPC Ardmona v tinned tomatoes dispute, we are now starting to address tariffs and restrictions again. In the J R Simplot talk of closing canneries in Tasmania the issues are similar. It keeps going, education sector decimated (foreign students), tourism at a competitive disadvantage. Shell closing first Clyde then any thoughts over Geelong. Caltex at Kurnell then at Lytton. Why are we subsidising production of petrol cars when we export so much gas. Synopsis Cut the double speak. As a child I always laughed in westerns when apache accused white man of speaking with a forked tongue. We are sick of being the play thing of foreign interests, and government being complicit. Ignorance or apathy or base stupidity. Why are 2,000,000 Australian not participating in employment sufficiently? They are unemployed, not participating or want more hours. Basic truth is a very rare commodity. We all must play our part, and our leaders must play their part. Believing in sanity is indeed insanity. |

Game 1 Review started:
Game 2 Review could start exactly the same except substitute NSW for QLD and you get the game outcome. Once again the NRL ‘no punching’ rule came to the fore … one guy threw a punch and four guys get sin-binned. The most stupid aspect of the one match suspension handed out to the Merrin – the guy who threw the punch(s) – gets served at Club football level … absolutely stupidity … His club gets penalised and he gets to play again in SOO 3 … same with Gallen in SOO 1 – how is that equitable … In all other sporting codes match suspensions are served at the same level … SOO is being turned into a NSW sponsor event to stop QLD’s dominance … Tate was on the receiving end of the Merrin punch and was one of the players sent to the sin-bin – his part in the fracas was a push on Gallen to get him off the tackled player – the referee should have penalised Gallen for the ruck infringement and every thing that happen from there can be blamed on the referee for not policing the rules in a consistent manner … In the wash-up has the referee been sin-binned – demoted – docked pay – missed match payments for his error … To the game: NSW Backline:

The game never reached any highs in an emotive sense as the Nation had been on edge all day over the Rudd/Gillard spill. The talking point as with Game 1 is the punches thrown … the NRL have to comes to terms that the public will no longer accept mediocrity in referees … They have every aid available to make sure they get decisions right – but their on field performances around the ruck in slowing the play the ball, the 10 meter rule, hands on the ball in the ruck, the niggle, and so forth all have inconsistency in the way they are policed. Watch any game and you get tolerance levels that very from different referees and by the same referees throughout single games – i.e. holding down and hands on the ball in the ruck are policed harshly early in games, but by mid game these rules are not policed the same way … It’s all a changing and the showpiece of our game is under threat – not only because referees try to help NSW overcome their lack of player ability with an obvious bias – i.e. NSW referees have refereeed the last 3-4 SOO series … even that has not helped in the end … On another matter – the expectation that players have to be better people than the rest of the fans is becoming a joke … how dare they impinge on a players right to have a beer, to go out to a nightclub – perhaps the media should be taken to task over some of their bad personal habits … Persecuting players is an easy target for the NRL to lay blame – how many NRL executives at club and NRL level have a chequered past and drink problems … educating players to become social snobs and aloof only encourages fans to goad the players … look at the Goode episode … If kids and their moms don’t understand footy and think the game too rough for their little boys … go and play soccer. We all know why League has its appeal … its gladiatorial and it is the pinnacle of all contact sport. Let it be and get the nansie pansie goody two shoes attitude outta here …

M ate against Mate, State against State – Vale Gillard, Swan, Conroy, Emerson, Garrett, Ludwig, Combet, Windsor & Oakeshott – (who have I missed)? At this point in time Swan, Conroy, Ludwig and Combet remain in Parliament. There is time to fix that. It was fascinating to watch the ten pins line up – it was great to see them fall. It will be interesting to hear TV viewer ratings – Channel 2 v Channel 9 (State of Origin) & State of Origin v Channel Nine Go. For me Laurie Oakes was no match against Leigh Sales & Tony Jones but I did watch the football when Barry Cassidy came on. I was constantly thinking about my previous article “the tears of a prime minister” or “a March early election” and some more. Why didn’t Rudd do this last March and save Australia so much embarrassment? Was it really about Albanese being caught with his pants down at a Marrickville brothel? Hence Crean saying he would run as deputy? By next Monday the opinion polls will be showing on 1st party preference ALP trailing Coalition but only just – however the final result on election night is now too hard to prognosticate. We are now uncertain when the election will be called. Australia is still sick of this ALP machine, insipid – self interested and other soliloquy but Kevin Rudd is a statesman of the first order and makes Tony Abbott look corny. Seeing so many of the fools gone in one fell swoop is pleasing. More than pleasing it is an absolute delight. By next Monday, not only will Krudd have had a chance to build a piecemeal staff, but they will have a chance to put together an advertisement to lampoon the resurrection of Tony Abbott, the crown jester of the Howard frontbench, to Tony Abbott the man of steel (and no policy just negativity) – just steel cutting blades – cutting this and cutting that. Where Julia was fighting back the tears, her petulance continued – her staff should continue. Yeah onya! Windsor broke down. Today who is more pompous and grandiloquent? Grandiloquent is Rudd, and pompous is shared between Gillard, Windsor and ? Will Rudd ultimately be judged as grandiloquent? He still has time to develop his humility. He has earned a dimension to his character from the back benches that will be shadow in history. Yesterday morning I wrote we needed a catharsis. Now we have one. Catharsis by their very nature means creating chaos to effect change. Radical change, an absolute re evaluation. Last night on Lateline Bob Carr started to address policy. “On the boats, times are changed. Those arriving by boat are not humanitarian refugees but economic refugees!” Thank you for finally listening to the constituency. There is Rudd’s trip to China and Gillard’s trip to Indonesia to be addressed. Carr and Bowen could most ably deputise in Indonesia, Rudd will have to somehow save face. Bowen as new treasurer is very well versed in immigration. His offerings mean much. I personally find him a statesman above the average. Bob Carr remains enigmatic. I can’t say much about him beyond he remains a NSW fringe right operator and is very confused and confusing. At times he is deluded and delusional. For example he is only in the Federal senate courtesy of Julia Gillard, yet now he is running with the foxes. Why would you trust him? Penny Wong and Jacinta Collins in the Upper House are some form of balance. The AWU connection is illuminating. Ludwig will not serve in a Rudd ministry. Shorten came out offering support and thereby ended his own credibility and that of Paul Howes. The high moral ground remains the trump of all trumps. A full public investigation of WRA and HSU would guarantee election victory to either side. I first said that at least 12 months ago. I expect WRA will now barely see daylight again. It is the hatchet of all hatchets and will be buried along with others only used if the AWU attempts to resurrect. Gillard is gone. While writing this I needed to go driving. I got to thinking what a waste of space talk back radio is. Rhonda from Katoomba said Gillard is not finished. Gillard has only promised not to contest the seat of Lalor at the forthcoming election. One more, Onya! The people of Australia are seething that they didn’t get to thrash the ALP for this period of evil self indulgence. It was an episode of unbelievable shame upon democracy. Far too many would love to express their opinion through the ballot box. But one shambles would have lead to greater catastrophe. It is thankfully over. The seat of Kingsford Smith is now a bellwether. Heartland ALP formed in 1949 that through time has become marginal. It produced Lionel Bowen of Mooramie St, Kensington, but Kensington is now a border with Wentworth. It also produced Lionel Murphy of Todman Ave, Kensington, The Hills of MacDougal St, and the Brereton’s of Balfour Rd. Daniel Curtin preceded Lionel Bowen. Laurie Brereton succeeded him. In the 64 years only 6 have sat there, all ALP. Traditional areas like Coogee and South Coogee have been taken over by nouveau rich. They are now traditional right wing polling stations. Pagewood is no longer industrial. There are only 2 real contestants for the ALP pre selection to replace Peter Garrett. Bob Carr or Kristina Keneally? I expect to see Kristina get the nod, but am not absolutely sure. The ALP had a margin in 2010 of over 5%. On election night it is worth watching. The Liberal Party has nominated a Michael Feneley. He is Cardiology Director at St Vincent’s Hospital and ran in 2010. The other seat I will be watching is Rankin (and Lilley). I heard Dr Jim Chalmers former Chief of Staff of Wayne Swan is seeking ALP pre selection. Lilley represents one of the few seats where the electorate can punish the Federal ALP. Jim Chalmers represents something similar. Having released a book only a month ago on the destructive internal power struggles, what skin does he have in the game? Labor needs to retain every seat, and cover for New England and Lyne. Rankin is no different to Lindsay. Rankin was first formed in 1984. There have only been 2 sitting members. It is outer metropolitan Brisbane. In 2007 QLD carried the result for Kevin Rudd. First Qld Prime Minister and treasurer to boot. Chris Bowen is no guaranteed ALP retain as the treasurer. At this early stage, I predict the result will be known on election night by about 11pm. Every seat will matter. There will be Coalition 85, Ind 2, ALP 59 with 4 too close to call, due to counting postal and absentee. I can’t think when the election date will be, but if it is not on August 10 or 17 then there is no reason to not wait for September 14. Very importantly the Coalition will need to watch themselves. The funniest quip last night was “if 1993 was the sweetest victory, then 2013 might just be a diabetic attack. I am delighted. Farewell Julia, fare thee well. ver the next 8 months Australia will play England in ten tests, 5 in the UK and then 5 on Australian soil with each set of 5 determining the holder of the Ashes. This is unprecedented. In 1962/3 and 1965/6 England toured Australia 3 years apart but the intervening tour by Australia was in the winter of 1964. The next series in Australia was 1970/71 5 years later. That was about South Africa being boycotted over apartheid. After boycotting South Africa Basil D’Olivera and Tony Greig went onto play for England, Kepler Wessels for Australia. Basically Australia wins the Ashes on Australian soil and holds them for 18 months until they tour England and lose them again and then wait 30 months to regain them on Australian soil. There are many famous exceptions like 1930, 1934, 1989, 1993, 1997 & 2001. During Bodyline in 1932/33 England won in Australia, and the last series in Australia 2010/11 England also won. There are others. For the record Australia has won 123 of the 310 matches (39.67%) England (the MCC) has won 100 (32.25%) and there have been 87 draws (28%). Until the tour of 1989 the honours were essentially even. Slater and Taylor ushered in a wonderful era. What an era it was. Waugh, Waugh, McGrath, Warne, Healy, Langer, Hayden, Gilchrist and Martin. Not to forget Gillespie. The series over its 136 years has led to many a yarn of truth or scuttlebutt and most importantly tradition. Did Lillee and Marsh sell their soul for 30 pieces of silver at Headingly in 1981, and if they did, why were they ever selected again? Or did Geoff Boycott not tour in the summer of 1974/75 because he was a coward scared to face Thommo and Lillee. Then there was Ald. Clem Jones personally preparing that wicket at the Gabba, or the day at the Gabba when wags from Enoggera army barracks all dressed as Arfur Dunger released a live piglet onto the pitch with Botham written on one side Lamb on the other(referring to Ian Botham and Allan Lamb). Indeed why did Jardine, Voce and Larwood never represent the MCC again after bodyline? The greatest honour for a player is to tour on an Ashes tour. More than that travellers and tourists and aficionados base their travel plans around these events like the Balmy Army. My only visit to Lords was a test between NZ and MCC, sadly. I went home at tea time bored. The 1st Test this series is at Trent Bridge, Manchester on July 10 – 14. Strangely the 4th test is held at Durham. Is England now scared to play us at Headingley? In the last series there was the 1st test at Cardiff in Wales and Edgbaston also doesn’t feature in this series. The series (5th Test) concludes at the Kennington Oval on August 25th with the 1st test at the Gabba less than 3 months later scheduled for November 21st. For these upcoming tours there is only apathy. Some think it is over exposure. Who remembers when we go watch the Shield cricket live? We will go and watch Stackie get his century after tea! Over exposure is a contributing factor. So is the silly amounts that players are paid. While writing this article Mickey Arthur South African born Australian coach has been sacked. Cricket Australia has nothing more to say after today’s news conference. For Australia to have a realistic chance in this series, they need bowlers to tie down the English batsmen with line and length. This is what has changed in the last decade. With Glenn McGrath you could count on him containing batsmen. And Warne would spin them out. McGrath had 250 odd test wickets and insisted he was not in the same league as Dennis Lillee. What a top bloke. The very concept of the ashes rings very true today. What can Australia do to re ignite the fire? I personally am hoping. Aussie, Aussie, Aussie. Oi! Oi! Oi! I can’t even name our pace attack. It sure beats federal politics |

The 2013 State Of Origin Match-up’s
Qld were never in the game – as if they left their ‘mongrel’ behind … NSW played all over them and proved that attitude counts for so much at this level … To the referees: Momentum was given to NSW from the outset – the ‘knock-on’ call when Tate went up for a high ball and replays show he never touched the ball set up the repeat set that NSW scored their first try from. Early penalty to NSW for ‘hand on the ball’ – only one given all night yet the NSW players were just as guilty – Gallen’s cheap ‘stiff arm’ in front of the referee went unnoticed and was put on report only after the ‘stink’ happened and replays showed the infringement and the referees view of the play. Gallen’s pathetic plea to mitigate his ‘cheap shots’ has to be seen for what it was – and the referee’s inaction on the matter – i.e. keep that stuff out of the game will see him booted for Game 2 … Qld won penalties 7-5 – but never a penalty in NSW half … Game quality: NSW ball security kept QLD in the game – and QLD replied in kind – their normal clinical finishing was all over the place. NSW put in a slick performance from the kick off and deserved their half-time score – QLD won the second half and at no time did they ever look like they were ever likely to reign in NSW lead. NSW will have some belief and deserved their win … the final scoreline flattered QLD’s efforts … Not sure what QLD’s problem was – but their forward pack was outplayed across the park starting with Cameron Smith’s efforts. He missed Jennings when he scored his try, as did Cronk and three others. Farrar was given too much room from dummy half and that should have been Smith’s task … Inglis was AWOL until the last 20 minutes … him coming back to center after his stellar fullback performances for Souths is an issue. QLD have three fullback’s in their backline … that has to be a problem when players have to remember as opposed to natural instincts honed in their normal positions. Slater has to stay at fullback – Cronk and Thurston don’t work as half and five-eight, reverse them and allow Thurston to get closed to the ruck – he has a better kicking game given what Cronk served up last night … and Cronk’s defence was suspect around the ruck in a weak forward pack. The game never reached any highs – NSW fans will take the win and head to Suncorp with a spring in their step – they’ve been there before and if they don’t win in Brisbane – the chances of them winning again in Sydney in the decider will be far different to last nights odds … Then again – this QLD side might be complacent enough that a series loss is on the cards … Meninga has some work to get his forwards up to scratch – and instill some fire in the belly … but right now if you can get 7/4 – 2/1 about a QLD series win – you’ll be able to lay that off in Game 3 if QLD win Game 2. Congratulations NSW – you deserved the win …

The 2013 State Of Origin Match-up’s
Closest the two teams have been in ranking terms since these rankings have been going. I think NSW are closed on paper and the big disappointment was to pick Pearce at half-back with so many other good options. Pearce has had his go – burnt a lot of five-eights along the way. Daley as a Coach at this level on the back of Stuart and Bellamy before that. he won’t go well … Farrah is another interesting selection given the weak week in week out performances from the Tigers. His rival Priddis is also out of sorts. How far big Dave Taylor has fallen now that he is back in QLD … Why switch Morris off Inglis – he did such a great job last season – that position match-up will change for game day … Inglis at center will be interesting – had a very quite series last season and will be too much for Jennings … QLD look soft in the forwards … no hitters – NSW have a shot and Bird is in the best form of his life and if he keeps his cool during the game – he will be the man … Gallen according to reports won’t play the 1st game unless he risks a needle … Likewise Gidley … but that is no real loss with Sutton and Reynolds (Sths) called into the squad …

It was a war of attrition – Manly’s uncompromising in your face defense, the Rabbits held their ground with equally resolute defence, but Manly are experts at the intimidation tactics and it is a detriment to their game. Coach Geoff Toovey has his players of a mould to show no quarter, and this defense intensity lends itself opportunities for teams to find weakness’ in other areas. For mine – it is just up to teams to exploit the compressed defence and take advantage of this singular motive Manly tend to play with – that is to try their best to physically hurt the other players. No doubt – this game was by far the best of the season and the intensity never died. When it seemed all was lost when Manly trailed 20-0 with 15 to go – you just knew South’s were still vulnerable – the crowd stayed and willed the home team for a fight back and it came to make for an exciting finish. The fans watching TV wanted a Souths victory – nobody really likes Manly – even their own fans have a ‘hick’ like love hate relationship with their team – parochial to the end, but equally willing to bag their team when they disappoint. Manly’s ‘Brookvale’ is the new coliseum and this clash of the Titans was fitting for the occasion. Other teams should dread the ‘hurt’ they will feel whenever they visit. Manly are viewed by many as the ‘grubs’ in the competition – nothing they do on the field is done without the intention to try to hurt the opposition player. That is not footy in the true sense. Their intensity in the gang tackle will seriously hurt a player at some point – it is not matched by any other team. Footy is a physical contest – and players do get hurt – but Manly take that probability to another level. There were four (4) incident reports against Manly players coming out of the game. There is another that escaped the referees that will most likely be placed on report as well. Two of the charges belong to Fa’aoso and committed on the same player [Inglis} for the same breach – a spear tackle. Matai’s swinging arm is his trademark and the intent in this tackle may have bene to strike the ball but the player has to be responsible for when aggression goes wrong. He has to get a long stint – that swinging arm could kill someone if he gets it wrong and he has enough form to give him a Les Boyd type suspension. Brett Stewart took a cheap shot as he lifted an elbow on the Rabbits winger and he should also get a week or two. It all just shows a ‘grub’ mentality and the image of Watmough puling out his old fella to have a piss in public when the camera’s were rolling in a premiership after party a few years ago give evidence to the culture within the club. Hope all these reports get the players responsible sent down big time – every one was a cheap shot. The most hated player in the Manly forward pack is Watmough – and again tonight was amongst the chief offenders in the niggle factor with the work he does in the wrestle and on the ball stuff. He can be a gifted player and to see him go that way stains his natural talents. Whenever he plays SOO he has been found wanting at that next level – if he had an attitude like Burgess, Webkie, Petro, or some other player who just worked hard in defence and attack without the niggle – his chances of making a difference at the higher level would be improved. He just gives away cheap penalties and it cost his team. I take nothing away from the intensity of tonight’s game, they are a side that make you earn the win and their intimidation tactics wins them a lot of games. Playing that type of game can have its drawbacks … backing up the following week and the next … and the next … players get injured or begin to carry injuries into games. Manly have a habit of losing to lower ranked teams and to look for a reason you have to consider how they play their football on a physical level. Souths proved they are the real deal this season and the next time these two teams meet – Manly will be out for revenge and Souths will again be out to prove themselves. We’ve been blessed with some stella performances in these first seven rounds. The top-tier of this competition has already established itself – Storm, Rabbits, Manly, and Easts … Before the season started I would have said the Bulldogs would have been in that four … but after six rounds they sit at the bottom of the table. These four teams have set a high bar for all the other teams and I can’t see any other team breaking into a top four spot.

Broncos mistake rate in the 2nd half under pressure skyrocketed. Hodges had a shocker 2nd half – Prince was also lacking in defence … the forward pack were done at the 65th minute after Manly had rushed to a 22-14 lead. They put on 16 pts in five minutes and had two ot three other try’s pulled back. If you were a Bronco’s fan it was woeful. Snoop Poo’s – Best on Field –

Coach Griffin had better work out his halves combo – Prince at Five-eight does not have the defence and Foran showed him up all night. Wallace was also out of sorts with errors in the 2nd half when the team was under pressure. Norman the other half in the mix played full-back and was pedestrian safe. But it was the forwards who let them down badly with their poor 2nd half performance under Manly pressure. Manly deserved winners – Broncos will struggle to make the 8 on tonight’s performance. There is no way Mitchell Pearce retains the State of Origin half-back position on tonight’s performance up against his main opposition. The match was highly entertaining and the Rabbitohs are a top four team this early in the season. Their forward pack looks more consolidated and played for 80 minutes which was a failing last season. They were clinical and merciless – the Roosters were outclassed across the paddock and so undisciplined for a first grade side … silly stupid penalties that allowed Souths out of their 22 so many times.
SBW [Williams] had a very quite reintroduction and he will realise that his comeback in a team like the Roosters will be hard work all season. Snoop Poo’s – Best on Field –

There were many Rabbitohs players who out performed their opposite number – the only Rooster’s players to hold their head up were Kenny-Dowal and Jennings. Snoop Poop blogged about the The Shane Warne on-field Episode by The Age’s Chief cricket writer – namely Chloe Saltau some weeks ago and she has come back for more. Again she dips her quill in ink she is not qualified to use. She has picked Shane Warne again to vent her hormonal weakness and in response it is time to do some research on Chloe Saltau. How dare she think herself qualified to try and tear down an Australian legend. Her stories come with links to promote her personal profile – not something normally used by journalist, but if you’re struggling to get creditability in a new gig – ‘by all means necessary’ right!!! Her linked profile has this to say –
A social policy reporter covering welfare and family issues – then thrown in as the ‘Chief cricket writer’ for The Age. ‘The Age’ is Melbourne based – home of Shane Warne for decades from where he played his Shield and Test cricket – you would think the Melbourne media would be friendly and respectful. Saltau wrote the following piece yesterday – make your own judgement …
Warne has obviously moved on from his Test cricket days – a new wife, a new lifestyle, yet he still has the pulling power with Australian fans and Cricket Australia pay him handsomely to bring the fans through the turnstiles Why would a social media reporter given a prestigious cricket writing gig set about making her name by bagging one of Australia’s, and the Worlds best cricketer ever? Women writing on male sport – what does it say – particular when their creditability has not been established. I blame The Age editors – what were they thinking. If one scrolls down Saltau’s column and read the comments to her on-line stories – there is nothing complementary, it is all anger and rage about Saltau and the focus of her story. She obviously touches the raw nerves of men who doubt a women’s objectivity to write about Australian male heroes, but in attacking Warne from her level of understanding about the game can only make her a laughing stock. Saltau looked at Warne’s on-field behavior and made a judgement call without understanding the art of ‘gamesmanship’, or the tension the game carries when pressures build. In other words as a women she has no understanding of men’s cricket and the juices that flow when combat happens. She just saw what she though was an ‘ugly’ moment and blamed Warne for that moment. To be objective in her slant against Warne – what has she written about Marlon Samuels part in the altercation? A male cricket journalist would not be so ‘girlish’ in the interpretation of the events. When Lillee and Miandad had a bat threatening issue many watching understood the moment – women who saw it did not understand and only saw the facial threats – the same with Saltau’s take on what happened. The fact that her editors allow her diatribe to go through to the printing presses says as much about them as it does about media coverage in general. To all cricket fans – watch the whole video below and decide for yourself if Chloe Saltau knows what she is talking about.  The staged confession by Lance Armstrong on Disney’s OPRAH show yielded nothing to appease the millions of cycling and sport fans across the globe. YouTube have many short clips of the interview and a full replay is eagerly awaited.
From the evidence the consensus is there was no contrition, no unreserved admission that what he did was wrong, no ‘sorry’, and as this scandal escalates in the public forum – the next question turns to the Doping agencies and how Armstrong was allowed to continue his drug assisted cycling career whilst others around him were being thrown out. Armstrong sued those who claimed he was a drug cheat – he received hefty settlements as compensation. Surely that represents a ‘fraud’ on the media publications, a ‘fraud’ in his misrepresentation of the truth … This matter is in its infancy, and as much as Armstrong would like it to go away and be allowed to live his life as if he can just turn the page and move on, and more importantly continue to live that life in the luxury of his ill-gotten gains, to allow him to keep his lifestyle is a massive injustice. Those who should have been victors will never have the chance to live in the limelight as Armstrong did after each of his seven ‘Tour de France’ victories. The sport, and all sport for that matter, has to get serious about drugs and doping if it wants any creditability from the public. How was Armstrong allowed to claim that he never tested positive over the hundreds of tests he was subjected to? There had to be corruption with the drug agencies and then the question – what was the motive to allow Armstrong to dope and not be outed, whilst his closest rivals and other contenders produced positive tests and were banned. This went on for seven (7) ‘Tour De France’ victories – the ‘EPO’ scandal broke during one of his victories and he now confesses to being a part of that ‘EPO’ usage. No – this confession is too packaged … the Administrators of the sport have to clean house and review all Armstrong’s doping test records and question all those associated with the testing procedures and find the people who assisted the ‘fraud’. Armstrong must go to jail – his wealth is based on a fraud – his wealth comes from drug use – his wealth comes from sponsors who were lied to – his wealth comes at the expense of the runner-up in each of his victories. Where do they go for compensation because Administration failed to do their job in keeping the sport free of drugs? There has to be the perception of punishment – else all sports persons will say to themselves – do the drugs, make the money, and if you get caught you get to keep the ‘booty’ anyway. Hell the reason for being a professional sportsperson is all about the money – cheating to get the cash is just not sport. Amateur sport it is about the will to become the victor, the training, the sacrifice, the living frugally until you make the grade … athleticism is the base line … turning that ability into something akin to a National Champion in a professional context should be about the hard work – using drugs to become victorious is the cowards way – it should never be allowed to go unchallenged and without the severest retribution. The Armstrong confession is more a reflection on the Sport Administrators and their inability to do their high paying jobs. Because this has the highest profile and represents the largest of any drug confessions … the retribution has to match the fraud. This is criminal activity and no one is talking about jail time.

| Australian Cricket legend Shane Warne has been taken to task by a no-name, no-brain journalist, and feminist to boot. Her story was about his on-field antics that caused Cricket Australia – another bunch of boof-head Administrators who know little about how to manage champions – to issue Warne with a one match suspension.
I have to confess – watching this minnow Australian Cricket season and the Australian Test team in particular, go through its paces during the summer thus far has allowed me to switch off watching all cricket without any withdrawal issues. The 2nd Adelaide Test against Sth Africa was an exercise in Australia being so close to victory yet so far. Then the Perth test capitulation served notice that Australian cricket still has far to go to reach the highs of the Warne, McGrath and company era. And now as the greatest leg-spin bowler ever ventures back into the arena in the 20/20 bash – a giggle fest at best – and largely as a marketing ploy to drag paying patrons through the gates, some nondescript female pretend journalist thinks she has the kudos to write a negative story about Shane Warne. … proves her credentials to be crowned ‘IDIOT’ and demands that Fairfax media consider sacking her for being an idiot on duty. Not only do we have a canary coloured dressing GG, and a Commie Red PM dresser, and a ‘black hides my fat’ AG dresser, and a boutique dresser for a Welfare Minister who claims she can live on $35 a day … this collection of witches personify the ugliness within women … not the physical stuff but the soul within stuff … This collection of flag waving feminista’s insult all women and give men reason to shun the new breed of women who open their mouths and speak as if to catch flies … It is a serious issue as it gives other pretenders to greatness a sense of false bravado that makes them think they are qualified to offer an opinion about which they know nothing – they are better off not saying a word as opposed to tackling a subject matter far above their intellect and/or understanding. Fairfax Media sacked Mike Smith you might remember for wanting to report the Gillard/AWU story on his 2UE program late in 2011 – what he was attempting to do was real journalism – what this idiot Chloe Saltau has tried to do is a feminist kneecapping of an Australia Cricket icon … for what purpose I ask … she has not earned nor will she even have the right to tackle such a task … what were Fairfax editors thinking letting this wannabe try and take down a cricket legend. Fairfax Editors continue to give more reasons everyday to shun their publication … Singleton’s buy-in will hopefully clean out much of the deadwood collecting wages for pathetic copy … editors included. I saw red when I started to read this story, and I have to admit my mind was made up to write this blog-post as soon as I saw the female name as the author … give Warne some respect for gods sake and put a real cricket journalist on a story like this and you might not look so stupid. Whatever Warne’s faults – Australian cricket lovers still love him because he gave us so much over such a long period, nothing he can do will ever tarnish who he was or what he was capable of. I feel the same way about John McEnroe – it was always drama and theatre for both of them and they thoroughly entertained us with their magic … I enjoyed the theater of McEnroe’s on-court tantrums because I could see the motivation behind the outburst … fierce competitiveness … and the outcomes often resulted. True champions are good enough not to stoop to these types of tactics … but with McEnroe people bought the court side seats hoping to get sprayed with liquid when he sent a cup flying … it made for the experience … and television viewers loved it … ratings always soared when McEnroe was on court … people were entertained … this Fairfax journalist writes as if she knows nothing about competitive sport and the on-field happenings between players … Other Cricket retirees this season in Ponting and Hussy could not lick Warne’s boots as a measure of their contribution or achievement in the game. the ball that bowled Mike Gatting in Warne’s first Ashes test was the ‘Ball of the century’ and announced his greatness … no other cricket moment in past television history can match the magic of that ball … We miss you Warnie … long live the King …
