T he acting PM Wayne Swan came out this morning and attacked Gina Rinehart over comments she made and published in an article in The Australian today.[Photo courtesy Larry Pickering.]A bigger man would have left the story alone and let people decide – Swan ever the man to beat a drum to an ALP war cry confirmed his ‘idiot jester’ tag and should hang his head in shame.

First – Rinehart’s comments –

Gina Rinehart tells whingers: get out of the pub

| Author: Andrew Burrell | Date: 30th Aug 2012 | Link to On-Line Story. |

AUSTRALIA’S richest person, Gina Rinehart, has issued a stern rebuke to those jealous of the wealthy: start working harder and cut down on drinking, smoking and socialising.

The controversial mining magnate also attacks Australia’s “class warfare” and insists it is billionaires such as herself who are doing more than anyone to help the poor by investing their money and creating jobs. Mrs Rinehart also suggests the government should lower the minimum wage of $606.40 per week and cut taxes to stimulate employment.

In her regular column in Australian Resources and Investment magazine, she warns that Australia risks heading down the same path as European economies ruined by “socialist” policies, high taxes and excessive regulation.

Mrs Rinehart, publisher Fairfax Media’s biggest shareholder, takes a shot at the media for failing to scrutinise “socialist” policies and for publishing stories that celebrate environmental protesters.

She says Australia must return to its roots by encouraging people to invest and build.

“There is no monopoly on becoming a millionaire,” writes Mrs Rinehart, who has built a $20 billion-plus mining empire since inheriting lucrative tenements from her father, Lang Hancock, in 1992.

“If you’re jealous of those with more money, don’t just sit there and complain. Do something to make more money yourself – spend less time drinking or smoking and socialising, and more time working.

“Become one of those people who work hard, invest and build, and at the same time create employment and opportunities for others.”

Mrs Rinehart claims anti-business policies hurt the poor and the young more than the wealthy. “The terrible millionaires and billionaires can often invest in other countries,” she says. “And if they do suffer, what does that really mean? Maybe that their teenagers don’t get the cars they wanted, or a better beach house, or maybe the holiday to Europe is cut.

“No, those who hurt the most when investments are killed off by taxes, green tape and socialist policies that are not friendly to business or conducive to investment are those who usually vote for the anti-business socialist parties. And for them, the price is very high. It’s a job lost, when they have few savings, a mortgage to meet and children to clothe and feed.

“The millionaires and billionaires who choose to invest in Australia are actually those who most help the poor and our young.”

Mrs Rinehart’s latest tirade comes as she attempts to secure up to $7bn in debt funding to develop one of Australia’s biggest iron ore projects, Roy Hill, in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. But the iron ore price has slumped to less than $US100 a tonne, casting some doubt over her plans to formally approve the project by early next year.

Mrs Rinehart last week attempted – and failed – to sell a 5 per cent stake in Fairfax after the company unveiled a massive $2.732bn loss.

The magnate’s Hancock Prospecting holds a 14.9 per cent stake in the publishing company.

Rinehart’s welfare comments an ‘insult to millions’: Treasurer

| Author: | Date: | Link to On-Line Story. |

Treasurer Wayne Swan has slammed mining magnate Gina Rinehart for insulting Australian workers after she accused people of being jealous of the wealthy.

In her regular column in Australian Resources and Investment magazine, she writes it is billionaires like herself who are doing more than anyone to help the poor by investing their money and creating jobs.

“There is no monopoly on becoming a millionaire,” Ms Rinehart wrote.

“If you’re jealous of those with more money, don’t just sit there and complain. Do something to make more money yourself – spend less time drinking or smoking and socialising, and more time working.

“Become one of those people who work hard, invest and build, and at the same time create employment and opportunities for others.”

She also suggested the government should lower the minimum wage of $606.40 a week and cut taxes to stimulate employment.

But Mr Swan said the comments were ‘‘an insult to the millions of Australian workers who go to work and slog it out to feed the kids and pay the bills’’.

‘‘The big question is whether (Opposition Leader) Tony Abbott will endorse Gina Rinehart’s social policies as he’s endorsed her tax, industrial relations and environmental policies,’’ the treasurer said in a statement.

‘‘Tony Abbott is Gina’s knight in shining armour when it comes to fighting for tax cuts for her and Clive Palmer.’’

Mr Swan added: ‘‘The question for Tony Abbott today is does he agree with Gina Rinehart that Aussies are lazy workers who drink and socialise too much?

‘‘Will he do her bidding and slash the minimum wage as Gina wants him to?’’

Mr Abbott has yet to respond.

But Australian Greens deputy leader Adam Bandt has joined a chorus of criticism of Ms Rinehart for insulting workers.

Mr Bandt said he was continually amazed at people like Ms Rinehart, who did not see the mining boom as belonging to everyone.

‘‘They want to take all of the benefits for themselves and distribute none of it to the rest of the country,’’ he told journalists.

‘‘A lot of people work very hard and work a lot harder than Gina Rinehart does and take home less each week than her.’’

Earlier today, federal Health Minister Ms Plibersek said Ms Rinehart was out of line attacking those on the lowest wages.

“I think it’s pretty easy for Gina Rinehart to say that people on the minimum wage should get paid less,” she told the Seven network today.

“I think she should try living on the minimum wage.”

Australian Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon, told Seven she respected success but Ms Rinehart was not self-made.

“She’s accumulated wealth from her family.”

Senator Rhiannon said workers were out there creating the wealth.

Building union chief Tony Maher said Ms Rinehart’s comments showed why Australia’s mining billionaires should not lead Australia’s economic debate.

The Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union national president said in a statement today that Mrs Rinehart’s comments revealed her “twisted logic”.

“At the same time as trying to import cheap foreign labour and avoid paying tax, Rinehart claims it’s millionaires and billionaires who are the greatest for social good.”What planet is she living on?”

Mr Maher said Ms Rinehart was born into a mining fortune and once you had such a fortune it wasn’t hard to build on it, especially in an era of record prices for Australian resources.

Swan has no idea how to throw a ‘barb’, or a political curve ball designed to discredit and cause mayhem in the Opposition ranks.

Swan’s retort over Gina Rinehart’s comments is a cheap political stunt and demonstrates the length and breath of Swan’s political savvy – he’s a desperate man and desperately wants to be seen as the alternative PM once Gillard is done over the AWU scandal.

Rinehart lives in the private sector and offers her comments without political slant.   On the other hand – Swan stood as the Acting PM when he made his comments and must draw fire on the personal attack.

Gillard can have no fear from this dilation.

Title:
– US Elections – Republican Derby  –
–  The Joke is on all Americans … and Us –
| Author: EYE-BALL Opinion | 30th Aug 2012 |
T he Republican Convention in Tampa Bay under the clouds and rain, wind and tempest from hurricane Issac –  heralded Mitt Romney and his wife as the new Kennedy’s of American politics.

It never ceases to amaze when the wife of a Presidential candidate speaks – Ann Romney’s speech would have been practised and edited to within an inch of its life before she went on stage at the Convention.Yet when delivered it still had the stench of elitism and ‘not having a damn clue’ about what America represents, or any understanding of where America is in terms of the post GFC recovery.

Romney’s wife said during her speech – ‘I want to talk to you about that love so deep only a mother can fathom it — the love we have for our children and our children’s children.’

I watched the highlight reel as most of us did – when I heard her say these words – I said to myself – ‘how dumb can Americans be!’

I searched out the text of her speech – full text of her speech can be read here – and the same link will also provide a video of her giving her speech.  How does one who come from such wealth and privilege talk to Americans about hardship?   She had a monster of a creditability problem for mine and this goes to speech writers who pitch delivery at vote casting – and not honest commentary that sets out solutions.

The only thing I can say after watching the live-stream of the Convention for a few hours is that Leaders have not got a clue how to tell the truth.  They sell themselves and the GOP – these Party Leaders think that is their only responsibility to the American people.

Americans are guilty of many things that have contributed to a World standing upon the brink of an abyss where the future of the current way of life for all the World’s population is under the most serious of threats on any timescale you care to use.

American Leaders are guilty of the most serious of misrepresentations – they deliver speeches to attract votes and choose not deal with in any exposed way with te American people about the economic crises confronting everybody.

These GOP Leaders procrastinate over ‘gun control’ laws that make them the joke of Western civilisation, they refuse to go after America’s rich and lift taxes, they refuse to speak on the truth about military spending and the agenda of advancement in war technology in ever increasing ways to kill mankind.

America always talks up its military strength in the face of elections – it’s a tried and tested success model to shore up Leadership popularity.   Both sides do it.

Yet the world media on clue has published their GOP Convention stories blind to the obvious, and supportive of the rhetoric without comment about the content.

‘Truth’, ‘Justice’, and ‘the American way’ – phrases used to rally troops and it works on all Americans.  The words are hollow if ‘actions’ were to speak louder than words.  Lessons should be learnt by Americans that when they use these ”ralling cries’ – history does them a dis-service,

  • Truth – the WMD debate established American President George W Bush as the liar to the World, and instigator of the Iraq/Afghanistan War – how did truth serve the World when it was needed most.
  • Justice – Bush was never bought to account for his lies – his staffers were convicted of crimes connected with the lies Bush told the American people and the World, and Bush pardoned them when he left office.   American Justice served – and the rest of the world can do nothing about it.
  • ‘The American Way’ – to outsiders has always been about American ‘honour’, integrity’, and a form of Government based on true Democracy.  The American ‘Tea Party’ revolution – recently called ‘The Taliban Party’ of America is the way of the new Republican Party.  Militant, racist, and values more aligned with KKK than traditional GOP values.

Here are two stories plucked from the many thousand reported about ”Tea Party’ values as members of the GOP in recent weeks –

GOP convention-goers throw nuts at black camerawoman: ‘This is how we feed animals!’

| Date: 29th Aug 2012 | Link to On-Line Story. |

Two Republican National Convention attendees were removed from the event, after they allegedly threw nuts at a black CNN camerawoman and shouted, “This is how we feed animals!” The network confirmed the incident, but did not go into detail.

The outburst was reported by TPM Tuesday when former MSNBC and Current TV anchor David Shuster tweeted: “GOP attendee ejected for throwing nuts at African American CNN camera woman + saying ‘This is how we feed animals.’” It is unclear whether the assailant was a delegate.

Here is another link a story that appeared in June 2012 –

  • Huff Post – 15th Jun 2012Inge Marler, Arkansas Tea Party Leader, Resigns After Racist Joke
The Joke told is quoted below:

“A black kid asks his mom, ‘Mama, what’s a democracy?’

“‘Well, son, that be when white folks work every day so us po’ folks can get all our benefits.’

“‘But mama, don’t the white folk get mad about that?’

“‘They sho do, son. They sho do. And that’s called racism.’”

There is great concern for where American Politics is headed and to be completely honest – their slide down the totem pole of how the rest of the World views America is a slide that was inevitable.

If Americans feel they are losing their grip on owning the head at the table spot amongst World Leaders – they had better get used to it.   America’s economic recovery – so longed and awaited is not going to happen anytime soon.  It will be decades before middle and low-income Americans will return to their pre GFC lifestyle.

To counter this one might look to the Dow Jones performance in recent months – now sitting just 8% or so below its all time highs pre GFC.   A heads up to anyone buying stocks at these levels … you are part of the problem and remain a reason why America has lost its inventiveness, its spirit … take your capital out of equities and bonds and invest in your Nation.  Americans are too scared to invest in their own economy – they would rather pluck and plunder elsewhere and that just about sums up the progress of the post GFC recovery.   Its all been left to Government.

Any other analysis is pure mindless and utterly devoid of understanding of what the World is enduring.   The Bankers who caused the GFC, the Regulators who allowed it to happen, and the Administrators who spent US$10 trillion trying to prevent it – now have to realise that the debt created was largely wasted, and the after taste to that spend now has to be endured.

Any political speeches given in this campaign on economic management and into the future have been just words on a page – and Americans are buying it up in full view and election polling data.

When credit agencies get serious and try to regain creditability post ‘sub-prime’ ratings – American debt will be downgraded further.  Hell – they are talking about letting American States declare bankruptcy.  How desperate a picture does that paint?  Yet the DJIA keeps creeping forward.

The debt ceiling is currently at $16.39 trillion – analysis is that it will need to be increased early next year when a new President takes office.  The debt is currently at – $15.979 trillion.

Some links to US Debt Ceiling data:

To put it mildly – America are spending like a kid with a credit card with no mum of dad to tell them when to stop.  The election campaign process is to not talk about the debt levels unless absolutely forced to.   Neither party can get congress to agree to tax increases on the wealthy at a time when both Parties election campaigns are tapping into that wealth to run multi $billion dollar campaigns to get someone into the Whitehouse.

Morally both sides are bankrupt – Obama gets my support purely because he inherited Bush’s mess and his agenda was hijacked by the GFC impact before it started.  He’s been pushing uphill ever since and rather than gain ground – he has slipped and fallen several times.

He deserves another term – appointing Romney will mean another two years wasted before Romney stops his spend to implement his own election promises’.

The World awaited Obama’s arrival during the developing financial crises had become the GFC.   The World is now aware that even Obama did not have the magic to stop what was inevitable, and caused by 40 odd years of greed and avarice by World Leadership and Bankers.  All of whom were all too eager to treat the world’s population as the ‘sucker pool’ from which they drained via debt proliferation and created unimaginable wealth.

The age of ‘Robber Barons’ never left us – they just changed the colour and style of their clothes and became politicians – or the people behind the politicians.
