T his fumbling story is still at sixes and sevens – accusations are flying across Gillard’s horizon and as yet – journalists are sufficiently chastened and intimidated to not go ‘on the record’ with questions.It is all similar to the ‘Watergate’  scandal of the early 70’s. Washington Post journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein  spent exhaustive amounts of time tracking down possible witness’ and getting evidence that satisfied publishers and editors so that there would be no legal ramifications. The burden of proof for a journalist is greater than the Courts – without it many stories die before they even start.  This Gillard story currently resides in ‘blogland’ and outside the mainstream media’s coverage. That was until yesterday – at a Press Conference given by Gillard and Bowen on the Asylum seeker enquiry outcome – a single question was asked. JOURNALIST: If I can just take it to another matter. Slater and Gordon has said that it intends to ask the AWU to wave legal privilege to allow for the release of files relating to alleged misappropriation of monies (inaudible). Since you were working for the firm at the time, do you think that that would be valuable to the public debate and do you have any objection to that happening? PM: It’s a matter for Slater and Gordon and the relevant clients. … read full Press Conference here … This single question and response might just be the first crack in a dam wall that is set to burst. Gillard is on notice and to be honest – her demeanor is unwavering – if she was concerned she is not showing it – but then given what evidence has been produced – she has people around her who have sworn to protect her and she currently feels comfortable with that protection. As with any scandal – the flaw is as Mike Smith called it on Alan Jones 2GB program late last week – ‘in the coverup’. Nobody can be absolutely sure how those involved will break when pressure is applied. Already Ralph Blewitt has confessed his part, Bruce Wilson only needs to hear ‘immunity’ and he will light a fire under Gillard.  ALP stalwart Ludwig is an old man and won’t survive, Paul Howes is ‘young and naive’ and a lap-dog in Gillard’s skilful hands … Shorten, Conroy, Roxon, will all cover themselves in glory by distancing themselves from the ‘stench’ once it starts to ripen … According to Alan Jones’ commentary in his 2nd interview with Mike Smith (linked below) – some 30+ MP’s and 20+ Senators all owe their position in Parliament to Unions and their backing and the funding that brings. Listen to Alan Jones’ latest chat with Mike Smith here … All this exposed evidence and commentary clearly paints the ALP as a party with Union backing and all the negatives that entails.  Given the current scrutiny of Union funds and their use with HSU and this AWU scandal – many other Unions are shredding evidence to cover up their own skeletons. As a side issue – the Union membership across Australia are beginning to ask questions and it is quite possible that Union members will start the bonfire that burns the ALP from Australian political landscapes. Almost a A$billion a year is what Unions have to spend on whatever it is they spend members funds on. If they were a business, and subject to public records, we would all be better informed as to how the Union Management spend their members funds. Larry Pickering’s Facebook page – where this story gained traction many weeks ago with his cartoon followers – now has a frustrated and convinced readership.  They are blindly following Larry’s ‘Pied Piper’ tune and turn feral on anyone who offers comment advice to moderate their vitriolic outbursts aimed at the PM. Pickering has done his job – and fed his cult followers well with crafted snippets of evidence and opinion that have his readers convinced that he alone is the authority on this issue.  This out of control commentary is inflaming a public outrage that can and might ignite at any time. Pickering can’t be held responsible for wayward and dumb comments – it’s a sign of where Australia is as a community – the political divide is as far apart as it has ever been in living memory – and if the Unions are in fact the scum of our society,  then it is the Union Members who have to be convinced to change the ways they account for funds, and to open up the books to reveal the close political connections. Pickering offered up an affidavit by Ian Walter Cambridge, (PDF file format) – dated 19th Sept 1996 – who at the time was Joint National Secretary of the Australian Workers Union (AWU) as part of the evidence chest he is holding. This document is as serious as it gets when reading about what someone knows to be a serious crime – and his efforts to have it exposed. If this document is produced in front of any investigation into the events that happened 1992-95, then the rest will unfold  without too much fuss.  How Gillard is dealt with will be for Constitutional lawyers – her supporters who have mere MP status will serve time – as will Union officials who sat on this corruption for the last 15 or so years.  What Union members do to their Union boss’s is another matter.  That will depend on how far down the rank and file the graft payments went. There is no doubt that loyal Labour Party supporters will be in limbo with revelations about the Union’s control and influence on the Party’s function.  True Labour supporters will divorce the ALP for what they see as a betrayal of true Labour values. Call them naive if you will – but many Labour supporters are not Unionist’s, and these revelations have shocked them to the core.
