– The Speaker of the House Fails all Australians –
– Question time is a farce, avoiding accountability –

| Author: EYE-BALL Opinion | 12th Mar 2013 |
The resumption of the House today again highlighted the failings of The Speaker if carrying out the ‘Standing Orders’ under which the House conducts itself.

For so long now Ministers have easily avoided answering Opposition questions in a direct manner.   The Government uses the 4 minutes of allocated time to respond with filibustering type answers that have very little to do with the question asked.

The Speaker is the sole reason this avoidance of accountability has become an entrenched part of the Question Time ritual.

The rules are quite simple and obvious – as reported several times at this site in the past –

In that post it was highlighted –

Replies to questions

[104] – Answers

  1. An answer must be directly relevant to the question.
  2. A point of order regarding relevance may be taken only once in respect of each answer.
  3. The duration of each answer is limited to 4 minutes.

Rarely does a Minister respond to any Opposition question directly. The Speaker fails the Parliament and allows the avoidance of accountability by allowing question responses to ‘not’ be directly relevant. As a result the decline in the respect the public have for politicians is at all time lows.

Some of the behaviour demonstrated by all politicians in both Houses reflects the frustration MP’s have in extracting responses that are relevant and answer the question asked.

Question time today was another example of Government and Opposition going through the motions – the Opposition knew that the Government were not going to give direct answers to their questions, they knew the Speaker would ignore their ‘point of order’ requests, and that the Speaker would censor Opposition MP’s because of the frustration levels in the Government’s responses.

It starts and ends with the Speaker – if she did her job, then the House would noy be unruly and the interjections would be minimised.

The people have no say in these agreed rules between both Party’s called the ‘Standing Orders’ that govern how Question Time is conducted.

The Speaker is providing protection to the Government and that is out-of-order – and if the Opposition call her on it – it risks much.

When the Opposition becomes the Government they will use the same tactics when they’re in trouble and in essence … the people get shafted and there is no accountability.

Question Time is all about accountability and its current process is failing all Australians.

The EYE-BALL Opinion plea for action:

Gillard’s Government is poison to this Nation … how do we get rid of her now?

The message has to be sent – there are some 14 million registered voters represented by 150 MP’s – 72 of which are ALP.    If each of these 72 ALP MP’s received an e-mail, a fax, a phone call, or a letter from all the people who want her gone with a simple message like the one below –  :

This is a protest message …

… do you think it might motivate caucus …

Please – send this message to as many and as often as you can – bombard the Caucus Members with a message so clear and with weight of numbers that it will force them to act.

You could also think about sending it to the Independents, Oakeshott, Windsor, Wilkie, and Brandt,  as well … Katter already votes with the Coalition, and Slipper and Thompson are a lost cause and their fate already sealed.

The EYE-BALL Opinion …

  1. March 13, 2013 at 8:20 am

Every piece of news I digest this morning is about attempts to differentiate free speech from slander or untruth.

Attempting to say Mr Abbott has outsourced his nastiness is both slander and untruth. If Anna Burke can not rule it as such, because on the floor of parliament there is privilege then Abbott should sue for slander, outside of parliament.

Yesterday Opposition spokespersons Scott Morrison then Malcolm Turnbull both conducted press conferences on the lawn of parliament after question time to be heard. The saddest part for me is that the issue of Gillard’s staffer McTernan working on a 457 visa is not addressed.

Question time has failed us. There are far too many silly questions, and far worse responses. Gillard responded to the McTernan 457 visa question with contempt, accusing the questioner of being in contempt. We wonder why there are so many disaffected Australian’s.

This leads to derogatory press, that includes this blog site. Real opinion, well intentioned, wider debate, that should be subject to oversight by surreptitious means?

Our government fails us, but anyone who criticises be careful, we are watching you.

    About 2 weeks ago parable quoted;
A man walks down the road, there is a hole, he falls in, he blames others, he struggles to get out of it.
A man walks down the road, knowing there is a hole, he falls in, he blames others, he struggles to get out of it.
A man walks down the road, knowing there is a hole, he falls in, he blames himself, he struggles to get out of it.
A man walks down the road, knowing there is a hole, he falls in, he takes responsibility, he easily gets out of it.
A man walks down the road, knowing there is a hole, he takes a different route.

This government in 5 years, 3 months and 19 days is still at stage II of that wisdom. That is 1936 of exactly the same untruths and blaming everyone except themselves. Thankfully there is on 185 days left to September 14th.

The saddest part is that then the right wing alternative will not have a realistic opposition, and greater weight will fall on freedom of speech including sites like this, to present counter thought and opinion.

How long might it take for the ALP to go through a proper metamorphis. Eleven and a half years last time was simply not enough. After the pink batts fiasco Krudd did say the buck stops with him. That honesty was far too alarming!

I watched in dismay question time as the prime Minister and treasurer made a mockery of question time, we live in the darkest days of Australian politics shame on them both unwilling to answer the simplest of questions.shame on both of you

I used to say that Question Time in Parliament was a national disgrace. I now have to say that if any sane person can tolerate the rant for more than 5 minuets they are indeed an exceptional person or a glutton for punishment. What ever happened to the concept that our members of Parliament are all there to serve the people of this country? Beyond a joke.

I lined up again today … suckered and the gallery should be hostile … pelt eggs, tomatoes whatever … give them something to be fearful of …

The Speaker says in response to gallery outbursts – ‘This is Question time’ in her sturnest School Mistress tone and not a person took notice … what does she expect … the brats will tow the line … they should really watch replays of themselves …
