More on the MRRT out this morning proves yet again that when one courts the media and uses it as a platform, the end result often proves that the tango partners have their own agendas. The MRRT is biting hard at the Government and they are at their wits end trying to get ahead of the media blitz that will produce pol data on Monday that will see Labor’s vote test the 30% level.

This will be a trigger that forces the ego’s of Shorten, and other ‘faceless men’ to revisit another political assassin. AT the end of last year as the Government went to the summer holidays with a cross section of disasters –

  1. The news of the budget surplus backflip,
  2. The Opposition’s ‘House’ questioning of Gillard during the last HOR sitting week in 2012 over her involvement in the AWU scandal,
  3. Roxon as then AG involvement and appearance of the Government assisting in the Peter Slipper ‘sex abuse’ trial, the release of the ‘reserved decision until the summer recess, and the judgement’s dissent by Ashby and a legal system bemused by the reasons for the dismissal on the grounds of – ‘political motivated allegations’,

The ‘Budget Surplus’ backflip was by far the biggest con played on the Australian electorate. There was a summary story in The Weekend Australian’ today that exposes Wayne Swan as possibly the worst Treasurer ever … read that whole story here – it is an important read for both Labor and Coalition voters because it gets to the guts of what a Treasurer is responsible for.

[Note – if the link above only gives you a headline and a brief snippet of the story – copy and paste the Headline Title into a Google search engine and you will get the whole story.]

Here are the closing comments –

… Compare the achievements of Keating and Costello with Swan’s tenure as Treasurer. Undisciplined spending, failure to implement sensible tax reforms, handouts to industries such as the car industry that have no future, spin and non-delivery of core promises. He has been much more concerned with redistribution than increasing the size of the economic pie.

Swan will go down as the Treasurer who was gifted an amazingly strong fiscal position, only to blow it on Labor follies. His term as Treasurer has coincided with the highest terms of trade in living memory – dizzying heights that have persisted for several years – and yet there is little to show for it.

He has failed to achieve any significant microeconomic reforms, has ignored the states and has added layers of regulations to doing business. His relationship with the business community is sour and unproductive. The Australian economy is much less competitive than it was five years ago.

His photograph will be added to the line of past treasurers. But he will not be rated as one of the exceptional ones, notwithstanding his own self-regarding assessment. In fact, he will join the reasonably large cluster of useless and incompetent treasurers whose inaction and errors have had to be righted by the small number of capable ones.

This site through author EYE-BALL Guru has given Treasurer Wayne Swan a deserved hard time ever since the site started in late 2010.
There is no greater ‘dunce’ when it comes to understanding economics and the role of a Treasurer in determining policy’s that drive economic growth.

Swan’s been a ‘credit card’ junkie never having worked in the private sector. His personal website – linked here – explains his history [About Wayne] – and is part produced below:

… Prior to entering Parliament I had many jobs and was involved in all areas of community and public life. I chaired Labor’s Caucus Economics Committee from 1993 to 1996. I was the State Secretary of the Queensland Branch of the Australia Labor Party and campaign director for Wayne Goss’ historic election victories in 1989 and 1992. I was the Shadow Minister for Family and Community Services from 1998 to 2004 before becoming Labor’s Shadow Treasurer from 2004.

In 2005 I published a book called Postcode which tells a story about how our society has become a patchwork quilt of winners and losers across all our postcodes. I wrote it because it’s clear to me that it has become harder and harder for people of humble origins, or living humbly, to have their voices heard in our country’s political and policy debate.

During my time in Federal Parliament I have been associated, in particular, with reform of the tax and transfer payments system; labour market participation; climate change; ageing and population policy; and standing up for the disadvantaged. My twin objectives in public life have always been to create prosperity so we can spread opportunity. The most important thing – apart from the essentials of life: food, shelter and clothing – is to have good relationships within your family and within your community. And the best way to make sure that everyone has the chance to be well looked after by a loving family is to have strong communities. A shared sense of responsibility for one another is what makes communities strong, and builds the foundations of a fair and vibrant society. … read full bio

Don’t you just love the ‘noise’ created by the ‘words’ …

Cutting through the heavy overhang of self-assessment and pipe-dream scenario’s – the reality is that when Mr Swan says – ‘jobs, jobs, jobs, …’ he has no idea how to create ‘jobs’ growth other then to spend money on behalf of all taxpayers. The 800,000 new jobs he claims to have created roughly matches the year 12 school leaver population over the term he has served as Treasurer.

Also – how many retirees have had to re-enter the workforce to find supportive income because of the hard economic reality that Super returns are not enough to provide for retirement – so the new jobs claim has a creditability issue.

I was never a fan of Costello and in the story part published above – Costello’s achievements are highlighted – my angst was they he did nothing when the A$ began to rise as a result of the emerging resources boom – when the profits rolled in he did nothing to upgrade infrastructure to the mining boom – he transferred $60 billion of taxpayers funds to create the ‘Future Fund’ which is a great big ‘Ponzi’ scheme for current and retired Parliamentarians, Military, and other privileged Public Servants drunk on the excess’ they voted themselves.

This ‘Future Fund’ Ponzi scheme is a story EYE-BALL Guru in working on at the moment as a part of his multi-part investigation into ‘Australia’s Parliamentary Remunerations’ … see Part I here

The question being asked and probed by the media at the moment is all to do with the creditability of the architects of the MRRT as it stands – Gillard and Swan.

Will Gillard throw Swan under the bus to save herself – or will she admit that neither of them had any idea when they negotiated a ‘truce’ with the miners when Gillard first became PM? There is accountability – yet the MRRT is but one of the Treasurer’s disasters.

No matter how many Ministers come out and talk about and provide excuses linked to revenue falls, the EYE-BALL Guru research demonstrates – see Table linked here – that the tax collect grew by 8% and 10% in 2011 and 2012 respectively.  These rates of growth rank as 3rd and 7th highest over the past 17 years.   It was never an unexpected fall in revenues – it was an overspend on expenditures – said so eloquently in the story linked above …

The Government spent its MRRT and Carbon Tax revenues before the tax collect was confirmed – a massive economic error and something that Swan should be harshly punished for.  It was his job to tell Ministers and the PM that the programs they were wanting could not be funded.  Swan made his decision to let them all drink at the Treasury trough … increasing his credit card limit as often as he had to.  The debt-ceiling now stands at $275 billion, up from $125 billion just two odd years ago.  The actual debt stands at more than $260 billion currently and this year’s surplus now standing at a $22 billion deficit is still be done.

There should be punishment and Swan will depart Parliament at the will of the electorate with a pension scheme giving him $200k a year for life with all the other perks thrown in as well.  There is no accountability in that result.   We the people will have to endure Swan’s pathetic financial management for generations to come.

Swan was asleep at the wheel – if a ship’s captain caused a disaster in similar circumstances he would face jail time over job responsibilities and ‘duty of care’ – Politicians do not have that direct accountability and this remains a major flaw in the way our Democracy works.

We all get what we deserve because we don’t impose Constitutional rules on Governments that limit the damage they can do.

Larry Pickering’s Political Take:

To bring some much-needed levity – there is always the Larry Pickering Cartoons … below is a sample of his summer offerings – his images page can be access here[click on image below to enlarge] … enjoy and don’t hurt yourself with the belly laughs …

Larry Pickering also writes some very intelligent blogs including many on the AWU scandal.  Whilst not as regarded as Hedley Thomas in journalistic circles – his penmanship and his heady wit give him a take on things not easily publishable in mainstream media.  None the less … his take on events cuts to the chase and he does not mince words … his Facebook page can be accessed here

    The article has several things.

Since Nov 24, 2007 to now 800,000 jobs created. What is the population growth. Each new immigrant creates demand for basic necessities like housing, schooling, food, transportation and so on. Population growth goes hand in hand with jobs growth. So how has unemployment fared since Nov 2007? Consistently using 800,000 jobs number is a furphy.

Just about every other claim regarding GFC, is the same. Furphy. Export of our mineral resources has seen GNI explode. Hence the boat people issues gets exacerbated. People from Sri Lanka, claiming to seek asylum when what they really want is better prospects for their families. We will export our mineral ores, but we want it to be managed and without economic bubbles, just like our currency crisis.

Mineral exports are killing our domestic jobs, and our manufactured exports. Killing our competitiveness. We are now developing a manufacturing crisis where all producers want to move their production offshore. In the right scenario I support the incentives given to the car industry. My biggest proviso is, no cash for petrol cars. We are exporting gas, yet buying crude oil. America is now saying they will not rely on petrol imports soon due to gas resources. When you look at manufacturing over the last 1/2 a century, Japan has excelled through, better engineering and investing in technology. Australia must look at that Japanese model and try to understand why Japan dominates electronics and motor vehicles. Germany tends to spend money on diesel, Japan on hybrid, why not Australia through US based Ford and GM gas technology. Cleaner and better for our gas export prices. Toyota and Mitsubishi are a different Kettle of fish. Similar holds for steel manufacture and fabrication. How could it be that 1 tonne of iron ore plus several tons of energy is shipped to Shanghai and then shipped back as consumer goods equating to 1 tonne?

    This too is a furphy.

Furphy according to some (wikipedia) is scuttlebutt. The Furphy Bros built water tanks. Some of those trucks were also used by dunny collectors. Furphy was on the mud flaps of all sewerage collecting trucks at the turn of the 19th century. In Australia, the use of the word Furphy is used to intone, shit. What a load of Shit. What a furphy!

    Wayne Furphy Swan.
