Two days ago Australia was coasting with the demise of Gillard and her motley crew – then all of a sudden a major ‘drugs in sport’ scandal.   In the two days the scandal has been alive – allegations, threats, administrative shoe shuffling, and two goon ALP Ministers have managed to undo a century of sporting history by tainting all sports and sportsperson’s in this Nation.

The two insignificant ALP minnows – Kate Lundy,  [Oops – correction 9/02 – she is not the Federal Sports Minister – how dare I think that she be speaking on Sports doping if she was not the Sports Minister … ] – but she is a Parliamentary Representative on the Advisory Council on Australian Archives since 2008,  and Jason Clare, appointed as Cabinet Secretary in Gillards forced Cabinet shuffle a week ago,  fronted the media like a couple of bushrangers looking to plant the seeds of a scandal that will get the ALP troubles off the front pages.

Are we to believe that Sports administrators all around the Nation, the senior coaches of the top sports teams in the respective codes we love so much, the professional players who depend on a clean sport for their survival –  were all asleep at the wheel while the Australian Crime Commission [ACC] conducted its investigation over the past 12 months?

The Sporting world is shocked by the release of the detail in the ACC – ‘Organised Crime and Drugs in Sport‘ report, not just here in Australia but around the world.  It is the most talked about subject across the Nation.

I’m a sports lover, hell as a country boy who lived for sport, I played for QLD Rep sides as a schoolboy in four different sports – Cricket, Swimming, League, and Athletics.   I played squash professionally in my early 20’s, tried to turn golf pro in my late 30’s when a finger injury force me out of the game for two years.

I know sport, and yes I ponder the injuries to Australian cricketers and the fast bowlers ranks, side strains, calf, and Watson’s dodgy hamstrings, over trained I say, too much work in the gym, target muscle groups, and not enough on the field playing in match conditions.   Match fitness is everything for an athlete.

League and Union players bulking up, AFL players playing lighter for endurance and suffering increased knee-joint injuries as a result, tennis players, swimmers, they are all trying to work within the doping laws and keep themselves at the top of the game year round.   The human body can’t stay up for a year –

Hell prime race horses train for 2-3 months for a two month racing campaign and then go to the paddock for 2-3 months.  Sport scientists, Vet scientists, drug scientists are always looking for a new drug to give a better physical edge within the framework of anti-doping laws.   I have great doubt about the ACC report – a bit like the climate change report doctored to give the Government an outcoem it wanted for the Carbon Tax.   I don’t trust these buggers at all.

Maybe the drug users in sports in this Nation the ACC is talking about happens in amateur sport – feeder clubs where aging players go to still play and use the drugs to keep them on the field.  That is still serious, but if so – why sully all the great athletes playing it hard and fair in our elite competitions an a National discrace. There is a motive behind this report and its timing and the secrecy surrounding its compilation and it will become exposed in the near future.   Whoever is behind it is playing some sinister game …

There is big money in sport and in the US drugs are a big thing.  The dopers are light-years ahead of the testers and as with crime and criminals and the police who chase them – the good guys are always respondent and not ahead of the crims.   They may catch some of them but there not gonna catch all of them.

Late Lundy’s promise that ‘we’re gonna catch you’ in her on camera address was foolish and naive at best.  See it here.   If this was such a big deal, why wasn’t Gillard fronting the cameras to release the findings.  Hell she is in front of the cameras when ever there is good news – why not something like this?

Is it that widespread … the whole Essendon Football club – all taking supplements sanctioned by the medical and coaching staff.     Were they ignorant or operating within the rules as they understood them?

EIther Gillard went to Church for the first time in her life praying for a miracle earlier in the week and received her wish or some smart advisor in the background thought up a bag of tricks in how to bait and misdirect the media .

Nah – for mine this is manner from heaven for Gillard and I’m scratching my head to understand how someone so bad and so far out of her depth can get a break like this … unless of course it was a set-up from the get-go.

By the way – Jason Clare worked for Bob Carr – the rest of his employment history before he became an MP in 2007 is listed below – another member of the Mark Arbib, NSW Right faction – the question about how close he was to Obeid comes to mind.

Personal

  • Born 22.3.1972, Sydney, NSW. Single.
  • Elected to the House in 2007 as Member for Blaxland NSW.

Qualifications and occupation before entering Federal Parliament

  • BA(Hons), LLB (UNSW).
  • Policy Adviser to the Minister for Police and Leader of the House (NSW), the Hon. PFP Whelan, MLA 1995-99.
  • Senior Policy Adviser to the Premier of NSW, the Hon. RJ Carr, MLA 1999-2003.
  • Manager, Corporate Relations, Transurban 2003-07.

Another one of these ALP party hacks who climed the tree from within and under the protection of the Party faction … never done a private sector days work in his life by the look of it.

Kate Lundy’s profile is next:

Personal

  • Born 15.12.1967, Sydney, NSW. Married.
  • Elected to the Senate 1996 as an ACT Senator.

Qualifications and occupation before entering Federal Parliament

  • Builder’s labourer 1984-86..
  • Organiser, Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (formerly Building Workers’ Industrial Union) (ACT Branch) 1986-96; Vice-President 1987-96.
  • Member, ACT Trades and Labour Council Executive from 1988; President 1993-96.

… and as as can be seen – another ALP Senator appointed with a full-blown Union background.

To bring some much-needed levity – there is always the Larry Pickering Cartoons … below is a sample of his summer offerings – his images page can be access here[click on image below to enlarge] … enjoy and don’t hurt yourself with the belly laughs …

Larry Pickering also writes some very intelligent blogs including many on the AWU scandal.  Whilst not as regarded as Hedley Thomas in journalistic circles – his penmanship and his heady wit give him a take on things not easily publishable in mainstream media.  None the less … his take on events cuts to the chase and he does not mince words … his Facebook page can be accessed here

This post was prompted by information submitted by a third party who wants to be named – ‘Modest Means‘.  The content has been paraphrased from a Sunshine Coast Daily story published in July 2011 – linked here.

‘Modest Mean’s’ take on the story is reproduced below:

Under the law, Peter Slipper may well be entitled to the presumption of innocence. But it’s a miracle he got the Speaker’s job in the first place, given the rows surrounding his expenses.

But of course we all know why he got the job in the first place.

Whether he’s rorted the system or not, Slippery Pete sure knows how to spend our money, racking up more than $1.8 million since 2007 in travel and office expenses, which we taxpayers have been asked to reimburse.

In 2009 and again in 2010, Slipper claimed more than $700,000 in expenses a year, at the rate of almost $2,000 a day. Yes, that’s $2,000 a day.

This included regular $300 taxi trips from Brisbane Airport to his home on the Sunshine Coast; a $15,800 study trip to Argentina; and annual vehicle expenses of more than $40,000.

In just two months in 2011, Slipper racked up $4595.40 in overseas calls from his mobile phone. Hasn’t the man ever heard of Skype?

Locals in his constituency of Fisher became so outraged by his spending sprees that almost 3000 of them signed a petition last year demanding a full audit of his expenses over the last 10 years. The Finance Department in Canberra then audited his 2009 claims but not did not publish its findings.

However, it did call in the Australian Federal Police who began investigating allegations of misuse of his fuel card, ¬ possibly by staff, ¬ before Slipper was given the Speaker’s job.

So just what has he been getting in his current position?

As Speaker of the House, Peter Slipper is paid a salary of more than $275,000 a year. That’s nearly twice what an ordinary MP receives. He also gets FREE business-class air travel anywhere in Australia and overseas; provided he is on parliamentary, electorate or official business. He is paid $253 a night for staying in Canberra, and up to $371 a night for staying in other Australian cities. He also gets free car travel anywhere in Australia. This includes a COMCAR plus driver in Canberra; taxis; self-drive hire cars, and a private car for personal and family use (for which he has to contribute $711 a year), plus a fuel card to pay for petrol.

And what will he get if he goes?

If Peter Slipper resigns as an MP or is voted out at the next election he will get almost $114,000 a year (inflation proofed) for the rest of his life.

That includes the extra $3800 in pension he has racked up for his five months in the Speaker’s job. This is obscene.

If this makes you as mad as it did me, send it to every taxpayer you know who will be voting at the next election.
Greed and corruption are rampant in the land and we have to do something to stop it.

Research on our Federal Parliamentary remuneration has been ongoing by this site for the past two odd years – ever since the House proposed an overhaul of remunerations that led to base salary increases from $131,170 p/a to $190,550 p/a.

The increase was supposedly to be offset by the yielding of certain Members and Senators  expense entitlements like overseas travel and the like.    The almost 70% increases in ‘base salary’ highlighted above happened in the period after Gillard replaced Rudd from Aug 2010 – Oct 2011 with additional increases approved early in 2012 and to take effect from June 2012.

The base salary is used to determine all MP and Senator, State, and Authority remunerations from the PM down to a backbencher, to State MP’s, Judges, Public servants appointments and the like.

For, example, the PM receives 160% of the base salary in addition to the base salary – i.e. her salary is [($190,550 * 160%) + $190,550 = $495,430)].  The PM and other MP’s and Senators are also entitled to an Annual Allowance of $32,000 if the Electorate is less than 2000 square kilometers, and rises for larger electorates.   There is also a base travel allowance of $19,500 if no vehicle is used, and/or additional travel allowances if a vehicle is used etc …

This goes all the way down the line and can be summarised by saying, that of the 150 Federal Members, and the 80 Federal Senators, the cost of salaries, allowances, travel, office, staff, and other approved expense allowances as itemised below, currently cost the Australian taxpayer some $350 million a year – [this number remains unverified but will be when the Guru post are published.]

This does not include unfunded and/or funded superannuation schemes.

The cost to taxpayers for the 150 Members and 80 Senators, that averages out at around $1.5 million per elected Member/Senator.

At the time this research undertaking commenced in early 2011, and in the month, and year that followed, the story became so big and challenging that to pin down a focus was difficult.  The changing scale of the ‘base salary’ was never ending and then a decision was made to let it lapse.   The research has again been resurrected and is being pursued as a priority and will be the focus in coming days and weeks until completed.

Some of the issues that had been looked into included:

  1. Known cases of abuse and rorting of expense claims,
  2. The Parliamentary Superannuation Schemes minefield,
  3. A costing verses productivity assessment,
  4. Historical comparisons,
  5. Members and Senators  interest’s register’s and their value,
  6. Ministerial and MP electoral and Parliamentary offices expenses,
  7. Staffing allowances,
  8. Travel and accommodation allowances,
  9. Gold Pass considerations,
  10. House and Senate Committee structures and remunerations,
  11. House and Senate leadership remunerations,
  12. and a host of additional approved allowances.

‘Modest Means” has given a reason to revisit the research material and publish some of the findings.  In coming days EYE-BALL Guru will begin posting on a story Titled –

  1. “Australia’s Public Sector – Part I of III – Remunerations and Superannuation – The Unfunded Public Service Superannuation Bill”, to be followed by –
  2. “Australia’s Public Sector – Part II of III – – Remunerations and Superannuation – The Member’s and Senator’s Gravy Ride”, to be followed by the final part as yet untitled but to project opinions and summary as to where  this is all headed.
