Title:
– A new low – Gillard buying Aboriginal Votes –
– The fairness [or not] in Nova Peris’s appointment –
| Author: EYE-BALL Opinion | 23rd Jan 2013|

The appointment of former Olympian Nova Peris to the number one (1) position on the Federal ALP Senate ticket, is a move by Gillard that places Peris as one of the star attractions to the ALP self-destruct party to take place some time this year, and in conjunction with the Federal Election.

Peris has been a sporting celebrity, but is she a focused representative for Aboriginal affairs, how about white Australians affairs, is she someone with past political credentials,  a person that all Northern Territory constituents will respond to,  is Peris qualified to bypass Local and State politics and jump right into the big league of Federal politics?

Gillard’s announcement bypass’s all the above questions and hands Peris a six year term as an Australian Senator.  She is not even an ALP member at the time of the announcement.   What is Gillard hoping to achieve with this announcement?  Regardless of the predicted licking Gillard will get at the next Federal election – Peris will still be elected to the Senate as the number one (1) Senate position.

The Party room rumblings from Gillard’s announcement are still gathering momentum. It appears that the 15 year sitting Senator Trish Crossin has been quashed from having any say in her successor on the basis of being a past Rudd supporter.  Crossin had announced her intention to vacate the position, but the process of electing her successor has due process.

It appears Gillard is not done with Rudd and his supporters and the cleansing is still on-going.

The recent ALP loss in the Nth Territory elections is being used as a motive. The aboriginal vote in those elections turned away from the ALP and Gillard acting under advice has been pushed toward an aboriginal candidate to help mend electoral wounds.

The political move is short sighted and obvious – when she plucked Bob Carr to appease her backers for the Rudd assassination, she was acting to instructions.   This appointment appears to be all Gillard, a ‘captains pick’ she called it.

I doubt Nova Peris has any real idea how big a pawn she is in Gillard’s larger game plan.

Nova’s emotive response yesterday suggests being overwhelmed.  When she won medals at Commonwealth and Olympic games was she as emotive?

I detected mental issues that might be associated with her life history, depression, and other serious issues arising from grief, oppression, racial abuse, they all leave scars and the question is – did anyone do a psych evaluation on Peris before Gillard made her move?

Yea – I’ll take your dump – but I think all Politicians need to pass a psych evaluation before they enter politics, and at least once again every term served.    Living a job where it depends on a popularity contest wears away at the self confidence, the ability to be honest with the public and yourself, and to do the right thing as opposed to the popular thing.   I’d throw in a lie detector test as well,  along with forensic accounting audits of all family assets every term, and for the next 10-15 years after they left politics – but then I might be a bit paranoid about corruption and politics.

The Obeid story makes this sort of accountability mandatory and if politicians say it is not necessary – it is the same as the Police Union saying no cops take bribes.

But really – who knows anything about indigenous affairs in the Nth Territory – if you don’t live there how could you know.

Mal Brough as Howard’s Minister for Indigenous affairs had a high profile but lost his seat in 2007.   He had a plan to fix the problem and Howard went to extraordinary lengths to try and sell Brough and his plan to the electorate before the 2007 election.   Brough was a high profile loser in that election … and in opposition, Brough would not have had much importance in policy input anyway if he did manage to hold his seat.

Nova Peris has been elevated to the Senate position bypassing all NT ALP rules governing pre-selection, and has not fronted the party members who are a part of the selection process.

What is the point of having State/Territory Party rules if the PM can by-pass them?

It could only happen if people like Bill Ludwig, Paul Howes, and a few other former Union heavies now serving as MP’s and Senators  were in agreement.

This points to a larger issue about a ‘Captains Pick’.   Dear Ms Gillard – you don’t have the right to a ‘captains pick’ in State and Territory politics – if you want to change the rules, do so before you break them.

In all the media commentary on this matter today – no one has really taken Gillard to task. They have soft peddled all around it – but none have said that it is constitutionally [ALP Rules] wrong to have done what she has done.  That any challenge to the announcement would create a controversy Nova Peris would have to live with without Gillard there after the next election to support her.

Is this a feminist decision, is it Rudd revenge against the incumbent, is it Gillard having her strings pulled again as was with the Bob Carr announcement, does it further dumb down the qualifications needed to become a Parliamentary leader, does it fit well with Nth Territory ALP supporters?

All questions that would have been answered if due process had of been followed.

How do we encourage people to become politicians, your sets of rules and checks would do nothing to raise the quality, only further thin the field! It would seem to me that the Captain can have her pick and what difference would it make.
All the issues you outlined is what makes politics and politicians so maligned. I believe that your focus is impaired by the myopia you have with anything “gillard” and whilst I am no fan you need to step back and let the “dog” have its day. Nova Perris could be a wonderful senator and deep down could be a beloved supporter of Kevin Rudd, what you can’t see is that it doesn’t matter!
Why doesn’t it matter, because all the people you don’t like are going to be there anyway.
If the Aboriginal people feel enfranchised by having her there, that is their right. Likewise if the electorate doesn’t they can vote with their feet!

Gillards’ move is political and practical and I am sure the other side are dissappointed they did not get to her first.
The fragility you refer to with Perris is either racial or biased against her abilities, either way you have no right to deny her. Your unconstitutional claim will be corrected and again what does that mean?

If Jesus Christ was available to lead either party would we deny him because he doesn’t carry a card! Off course you would immediately question his motives and parenthood and ask how could we elect a carpenter to parliament. He was thrown out of the synagogue and tried and found guilty by a recognised court so I suppose his criminal record would go against him. I am sorry Jesus but it would be politically incorrect to appoint you, what would the muslims, gun lobbyists and the Catholic church think. The Catholic church especially could not be led by him because they have ignored nearly everything he taught! so how could he be an effective leader (shit I hope he is not gay as well).

I know the answer we need is someone that does not believe in anything that is politically incorrect, preferably athiest, feminist, ex lawyer and known to take one for the boys!

I know! I know!, Mother Mary it has come to me! Its Julia and her band of merry men and women. (Its very difficult to be a member of her band as all the women have balls and the men do not!) (the other side of politics is that they have no genitalia at all…basically because they have not developed yet…so we have to wait to see what they turn out to be)

Imagine all the people…living like we do…..Let it Be… Let it Be…….Somewhere!…… over the Rainbow?

Forgive me Lord for we have sinned…
Bless you my children for “you do not understand, that you do not understand” just remember!…..da de da…..

Always look on the bright side…Always look on the bright side….Always look on the bright side of Life…dum dum da dum, da da da dum.

I felt sorry for Nova yesterday but maybe she deserves what she gets. If you live by the sword you die by the sword & I can’t see Nova coping with this position at all. Once the election is over she could be tossed out like an old shoe too. Gillard has again thumbed her nose at the voters of Australia. This latest move means that not one person who votes labor will know who is going to represent them. The person they vote for can be replaced by an incompetent back scratcher any time Gillard sees fit. I would be afraid if I supported that party.

The fact that Nova Peris represents the first indigenous Federal ALP parliamentarian, and of the feminine gender is truly wonderful. Senator Neville Bonner was very good for the Coalition back in the 80’s.

However, the fact that it is in the Northern Territory, where there are only 2 senators elected, (1 in each 8 year cycle?), and the PM has used this more than amateurish, (bordering on school yard logic), “Captains Pick” is just nonsense. As is often raised in these type of debates, Nova Peris should go through normal processes and procedures. I would wager at the coming Federal election the Coalition will win that senate vacancy. Therefore needing to attempt to shore up the indigenous vote can be perceived in several ways. There will be a higher turnout factor by the indigenous because of this indigenous issue. Go one further, Mr ALP, put an indigenous candidate further on number 1 spot in every state. All of the indigenous folk I know have a lot more decency than these creeps from the ACTU

Trish Crossin has every right to be upset. But as they say politics can be very brutal.

For the detractors of the PM it is simply another case of not playing by the rules therefore questionable that she is captain at all. It also follows a litany of unsavoury episodes that include knifing Rudd, appointing Peter Slipper to Speaker, further being propped up in the Lodge by the continued support of Craig Thomson, replacing Arbib with Bob Carr in the aftermath of the Rudd Challenge.

What an idiotic comment – invoking religion to protect an atheist Gillard …

Can you imagine a house full of Senators with no education, no knowledge of business, no experience at Board level type negotiations, no understanding of the larger issues that trouble our Nation … learning them on the job should never be an option.

Yet – you show you head above the radar and again become a target. I want smarter politicians, politicians just not looking for the pay and the perks – persons who have a heart beat and don’t sing the party tune – independent thinkers with a collective knowledge base and experience to know that to achieve greater goals – you need thinkers and visionaries …

DO you see Nova as someone like that – she becomes the norm and is not challenged by the mediocrity of the rest of our MP’s and Senators …

If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and shits like a dunk – then it is a duck … David … are you that duck …

    Hi Gerry,

It’s been reported throughout the day that Crossin is now going to go through the pre-selection process to keep her Senate Ticket position …

    Link to story here

I feel for Nova in that she is being used by Gillard for political gain and even if she knows this – she has no idea what it really means in this cesspool of vipers and backstabbing narcissistic sycophants …

Get out Nova while you still can and try to help the indigenous NT problems some other way.

    TO Eye Ball.

    Quack Quack

PS Rather be Duck than a Turkey

Your quote “What an idiotic comment – invoking religion to protect an atheist Gillard …
Can you imagine a house full of Senators with no education, no knowledge of business, no experience at Board level type negotiations, no understanding of the larger issues that trouble our Nation … learning them on the job should never be an option”

Do you mean “teaching” them on the …..option?

As an aside “invoking” religion, what does that mean?
Finally if what you said above is what you meant and I can only assume that most of our politicians meet these standards….then where is the place for a simple honest person? because all of the above only prove that politicing can only be done by people trained to lie!

One last question, if Jesus was available would you elect him?

  9. January 23, 2013 at 1:52 pm

How you must find it hard to be you … that is what we have now you idiot … a House and Senate full of dunderheads … all learning how to do their job on the job … and as each new candidate comes along – the job just became downgraded and the bureaucrat advising the MP/Senator took on more responsibility …

Jesus has tossed this world .. we already live in hell if you want to be brutally honest …

“When lunatics are in charge” – what did they say would happen …

“What can you do against the lunatic who is more intelligent than yourself, who gives your arguments a fair hearing and then simply persists in his lunacy?” …George Orwell …

    Or again …

“A casual stroll through the lunatic asylum shows that faith does not prove anything.” … Nietzsche …

The point being that we area all at some varying stage of lunacy …
