– Claims she can live on the Newstart allowance –

The ‘ugly’ duckling of Gillards ‘handbag brigade’ has made a boast that makes her ‘idiot’ of the new year.

When questioned about whether she could live on the ‘dole’, video capture has her boldly telling the world ‘yes she could‘.

The new changes to single mother pensions comes into effect today with mothers being forced onto the newstart allowance if their youngest child has turned 8 years old.

Read her story below and watch the video.

I could live on the dole, says Families Minister Jenny Macklin

Click here to view Video: has Macklin answering a direct question about whether she can live on the ‘dole’.

A MINISTER’S answer that she could live on the dole has been marked as “inaudible” in the official transcript from her office, despite the crystal-clear video.

From today parents will move from the parenting payment to Newstart in what federal Families Minister Jenny Macklin says is aimed at getting people back to work. About 84,000 single parents will be affected.

For parents in a relationship, the changes come into force when their youngest turns six.

It will save the budget $728 million over four years, but welfare groups say it will lead to more people falling into poverty.

When asked today Ms Macklin said she would be able to live on the dole.

“I could, and of course we understand that what’s important for people who are unemployed is that we do everything possible to help people get work,” she said.

“That’s the whole focus of this government – to do everything we can to help people to get into work and that’s what we’re doing with these single parents as well.”

But when her office issued a transcript of the press conference, the question – and answer – were marked as “inaudible”.

You can make up your own mind with the video above.

The Minister’s office has been contacted for comment in regards to the transcript.

Ms Macklin said the changes to the single parenting payments were aimed at getting parents back into work.

“What we have found as a result of the changes made in 2006, we have seen more and more single parents going back to work and of course the more that people go back to work the better.

“Unfortunately we have far too many children growing up in families where nobody is working. We want to do everything we possibly can to support families to go out to work and hold down a job.”

A person living on the dole receives $246 a week.

As a Cabinet Minister, Ms Macklin earns $6321 a week.

Ms Macklin was speaking at the Mercy Hospital for Women in Melbourne, where she visited new and future parents to celebrate the start of Dad and Partner Pay.

From today, eligible working dads and same-sex partners will receive two weeks of government-funded pay at the national minimum wage – currently about $606 per week before tax, for children born or adopted.

Will Enzinger, a self-employed equestrian coach, whose partner Emily Anker is expecting to give birth by caesarean section tomorrow, said the payment would allow him to take time off for the birth without having stress about money.

“Just to be there to support and do it together, it is a great opportunity,” he said. “It will be a big help.”

What was this idiot Minister thinking – she and her guests would have spent the value of the newstart allowance on their Xmas lunch – perhaps it may have covered the alcohol cost … or the prawns … or part of the cost of a gift she gave one of her siblings …

How dare she slag of in a meaningless statement … have her prove she can live on the Newstart allowance for a three-month period without her credit cards, or savings … have her find accommodation within a newstart allowance budget and live in those conditions.

Her boast is an empty statement as empty as her credentials to remain as a Minister.

Macklin’s Press office doctored the interview transcript disclosed in the video link above – her Ministerial Website transcript of the doorstop press conference states that her response was ‘inaudable’ …

JOURNALIST: Tens of thousands of single parents are now on the dole, could you live on the dole?

JENNY MACKLIN: What we know is that we needed to fix a difference that was in the system for parenting payment. Back in 2006 the rules were changed and anybody who had their youngest child turn 8 coming on to Parenting Payment who was looking for work went on to unemployment benefits instead. What we’ve done is really just make sure that those people who’ve been on the payment for a longer period of time have the same rules applied to them.

    JOURNALIST: (inaudible)

JENNY MACKLIN: (inaudible) what’s important for people who are unemployed is that we do everything possible to do everything we can to help people get into work and that’s what we’ll be doing with these single parents as well.

JOURNALIST: Some single parents say they stand to lose $110 – how do you justify (inaudible)

JENNY MACKLIN: What we found as a result of the changes that were made back in 2006 we have seen more single parents going back to work. And of course the more that people going back to work the better. It’s better for the family, it’s great to see mum and/or dad going or both going to work. Unfortunately we have far too many children growing up in Australia where nobody is working. (inaudible) possibly can to support families going back to work and hold down a job.

This represents an attempt by the Minister and her office to ‘unring’ a bell she boastfully rang when trying to justify the welfare ammendments she had introduced.

She can’t be let off on this matter … inaudible indeed … her contempt for the office she holds and its ministerial responsibilities make her an unfit person.
