Gillard v Rudd … it’s on again

T he battle lines are once again being drawn and this time Kevin RUDD is fully armed and ready.  He spoke today on Radio 3AW – listen via this 8th Nov link to 3AW Radio podcast – the Rudd interview happens at the 16:30 minute mark – the comments quoted below happen from the 28 min mark..

The interview was reported on and that story is copied below:

Rudd backs PM on AWU conduct

KEVIN Rudd has compared Coalition attacks on Julia Gillard’s past conduct as a lawyer to its unfounded “utegate” allegations against him as prime minister.

Mr Rudd told radio station 3AW today that Ms Gillard had responded strongly and effectively to the questions put to her over her creation of a union slush fund as a lawyer in the 1990s.

The former prime minister, who was deposed by Ms Gillard in 2010, said oppositions would always seek to gain political advantage when the opportunity arose.

“I had a lot of experience of it some years ago, when the opposition asked a series of questions about whether I was the corrupt recipient of benefits concerning a ute, for goodness sake, in terms of whether I have brought in a national program in the global financial crisis … to benefit a particular individual,” Mr Rudd said.

“Did I like all of that? No. Was it complete and absolute nonsense? Yes. Was it proven to be utterly fraudulent? Yep.

“So oppositions will ask anything. I believe the Prime Minister has responded effectively to these questions so far.”

“I believe the Prime Minister’s account of this period goes directly to the questions which have been asked.

“I believe she has provided a strong set of statements in the press conference that she gave some weeks ago on this subject, and responded directly to the questions which were put to her.”

Mr Rudd will appear on 3AW’s Neil Mitchell program each month in a new arrangement with the station that Mitchell compared to Menzies’ fireside chats, which he used to maintain his public profile after his first stint as prime minister.

Mr Rudd maintained he was “not a candidate” in any future leadership change and was content being a backbench MP.

“I am just very happy where I am,” he said.

In the so-called “utegate” affair, then-opposition leader Malcolm Turnbull alleged Mr Rudd had acted improperly on behalf of a Queensland car dealer who donated a ute to his local campaign effort.

It was later revealed Mr Turnbull was relying on false information from Treasury official Godwin Grech, who was later dismissed from the public service.

Ms Gillard has faced persistent questioning over her work as a lawyer at Slater & Gordon in the early 1990s, when she provided legal advice that helped her then boyfriend, AWU official Bruce Wilson, set up an entity called the AWU Workplace Reform Association.

Mr Wilson and fellow AWU official Ralph Blewitt are accused of using the association to defraud the union of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The AWU launched an investigation in August 1995 and Slater & Gordon interviewed Ms Gillard about her role the following month, when she described the association as a “slush fund” for the re-election of union officials.

Ms Gillard, who denies any wrongdoing, left the firm soon after the interview.

Speaking to reporters in Laos this week, Ms Gillard said nothing had emerged to contradict what she had said in an internal review by Slater & Gordon, which included a tape-recorded interview later revealed in The Australian.

“That internal review is out there in the public domain and what I said in that internal review is not contradicted in any way by any other things that have been said,” Ms Gillard said.

“What I said in that internal review is the truth.”

… Rudd praising Julia Gillard in the way she has responded to questions raised about the AWU scandal …

Common Mr Rudd – it stands out like dogs balls … you have to be a little bit more subtle than this … goading Ms Gillard and comparing your ‘ute’ with Gillards ‘fraud’ are like comparing the crimes of Chopper Reed and Pauline Hanson …

Can anyone else see what I see … read this again …

… “I believe the Prime Minister’s account of this period goes directly to the questions which have been asked.

“I believe she has provided a strong set of statements in the press conference that she gave some weeks ago on this subject, and responded directly to the questions which were put to her.” …

Praise and condescending at the same time … true politics and Gillard now overseas – the reverse of the situation leading into the Mar 2012 spill … the next two weeks before last sitting session this year from the 26th Nov bodes a minefield for all Leaders – the Government and the Opposition …
