NRL – 2012 – Round 2 Wrap …
Winners and Losers:

Friday night began with Cowboys ‘get out of jail’ win over the Broncos, and the Seaeagles win over the Tigers – both matches produced lead changers and even contests – both games were very watchable and entertaining.

Saturday say the Bulldogs put in a stellar performance to thrash the Dragons, the Raiders surprised most with a comprehensive victory over the Titans at home, and the Knights beat a lackluster Sharks at Sharp Park …

Sunday saw further carnage as the Panthers belted the Roosters and Storm did a number over the Rabbitohs at home.

Monday night saw the Warriors beat wooden spoon favourites the Eels in an injury marred match where Hayne was stretchered off …

The only undefeated teams are SeaEagles, Storm and the Bulldogs and their form has been good through both matches.  The disappointments in Round 2 were the Titans, Sharks, Dragons and the Rabbitohs – the Titans and Sharks were playing at home and this was disappointing for home ground fans.

As Roolie Bookie said in his comments attached to the Round 1 wrap – laying the favourites would have netted punters winners at the odds … parlays and margins would have been costly …

Weekly Comment:

It is still early days to put teams in the ‘can’t make the eight’ basket – but most of the teams that did not make it last year seem to be the teams that are also going to struggle to make it this year.  That much is obvious already.

The Players go round and round week in week out, change Clubs and rotate their services and Clubs think they get the right player mixture as each season starts. But injuries bite early and the toll of the season is the imponderable … the pre-season trial matches has some teams at less than full strength for Round 1.

I think less is better – meaning less teams the competition and player strength builds more evenness to the competition. This was an opinion put forth last year – two ten team competitions – the Premier League and the Reserve League. Read this story using this link.

This is not offered up lightly – it’s a serious suggestion – with the economic downturn and the already poor crowd numbers away from the feature teams – Club revenues from gate takings are set to fall … Television replays and broadcasts of games with empty seats will have everybody nervous – the televised games will become centered on those teams that can half full a grandstand … and by association this will have already become a two tiered competition …

This has to happen if the game is to survive well into the future  …
