NRL – 2012 – Round 1 Wrap …
The weekend – well Thursday through till Monday matches – produced a very interesting mix that reads well for a tight 2012 season.

Of the eight matches – 5 finished with six points or less as the margin including two ‘golden-point’ matches.  The other three matches 2012 had 8,12 margins and an 18 point shutout by the Titans.

The Losers –

  • Parramatta Eels – favourites for the wooden spoon already – and on their performance on Friday night on a soggy pitch it will be another long season.   Sandow – it is too early to tell but for $550k that means an awful lot of pressure on both player, coach and the players around him earning a lot less …
  • Nt QLD Cowboys – shutout 18-0 by the Titans – again the two Titian big signings Myles and Iridis both had big games – never saw the match – just highlights …
  • Penrith Panthers – lived up to their notorious slow starts – the loss of Michael Gordon was a tragedy yet again …
  • Souths RabbittosNew Zealand WarriorsCronulla SharksCanberra Raiders – and Newcastle Knights were all within reach of winning their matches – and their true form will emerge over the next few weeks.

The early take from the first round was the evenness in the scores.   Unless you have pay TV seeing all the matches is still to the disadvantage of NRL fans.  Why Channel 9 has not stitched up a deal to replay all matches on one of its new stations begs us all to ponder.  Just how much the deal with Fox to share broadcasts with the NRL is about the fans as opposed to the broadcast rights is in evidence.

Gallop needs to take a look at this urgently – with the economic downturn and 1000’s handing back their Foxtel subscriptions – the game is at risk from losing its broader base … particularly when Optus are contracting to show AFL on a 5 sec or so delay …

The NRL and ARL are the jewels in sports broadcasting – Cricket is a distant third given the empty seats in the current Tri Nations series … this is not about ratings and if shown later at night – at least the fans get to see their teams every week if they want.

Just a comment for the resident ‘Parramatta-Skirt’ who makes regularly contributions to the ‘Snoop-Poop’ page – ‘depression’ can be measured as ‘anger turned inward’ – so don’t blame the coach, don’t blame the players, don’t blame the Administrators – just blame yourself for being stupid enough to not pull the plug and get yourself a team that will make you happier …

The other story out of the weekend is the no-tolerance policy for referee mistakes – Harrigan’s admissions that mistakes were made is small solace for the punters who did their hoola on the back of those bad decisions – in the past it’s always been a subjective call and no recourse applied – but now with admissions and the replays to support the referee mistakes – a lot of people will be thinking ‘class-action’ over the ready admissions of errors.

What about teams who miss the eight for referee errors earlier in the decision?  This free accountability exposure policy by the NRL is a dangerous path …

Remember to bet sensibly – if it was me I wouldn’t bet on any Sports – to many ponderables – and as proven in the past – many players drink their own coolie and wager on the inside –  e.g. Souths 8 points up with 8 minutes left to play – the odds for the Roosters to win of for Souths to lose were very tempting …

Please take the advice – only bet when the odds are in your favour – if you have to ask how to figure out when that is so – then you should not be betting.
