NRL Finals Contenders 2011 –
the Broncos Exposed –

Broncos
Snoop-Poop this week commences a series of articles leading up to the NRL Finals series. It’s a safe bet to forecast the top five of the eight finalists have already been decided – Dragons, Storm, SeaEagles, Cowboys and Broncos make up this five.

The remaining three spots look like being Warriors, Tigers and Knights – but as the season counts down – these remaining three spots will become a battle between all but the three bottom teams who have no chance – they being – Titans – Eels and Raiders.
Lockyer

This Weeks review is on the Broncos – currently 5th on the ladder with 28 points and a for/against record of +50.

Their run home includes games against –

  • Rd 21 Sharks (h) –
  • Rd 22 Warriors (H) –
  • Rd 23 Cowboys (A) –
  • Rd 24 Knights (A) –
  • Rd 25 Rabbits (H) –
  • Rd 26 Sea Eagles (H) –

and on Snoop-Poop predictions for four wins from these remaining six matches – their forecast Premiership tally is 36 points.

This will see them in a battle with the Cowboys for the important 4th/5th spot – meaning they would play each other in the first weekend of Semi-Finals football – with the 4th team having the home ground advantage.

In analysing the Broncos – their performance against the Storm on Friday proved their forward pack still don’t know how to take charge of a game. They were similarly effected when they played the SeaEagles in round 12 – in both games scores were level at half time indicating that they might have the personnel to stay in the contest.

In the SeaEagles game – the SeaEagles forward pack muscled up in the first stages of the second half and battered and intimidated the Bronco’s forwards – they compressed their defensive line and rushed the ball carrier and without their SOO stars – the Broncos’s quickly became a rabble and folded and were soundly beaten 34-10 – not scoring in the second half.

The match against Storm on Friday was a repeat performance – a half time score 6 all – and Storm running away with the game 26-6.

The evidence is overwhelming – other serious contenders know how to beat the Broncos when the pressure is on – up-front and challenging their soft and underdone forward pack.

In this years finals series – they will have to toughen up big time to compete – regardless of the career and season ending emotion associated with Lockyer‘s retirement.

Hannant has been a big disappointment since the SOO series win – his hitups and defence are well below his earlier season offerings – and his soft penalty give away’s are on the increase.

McCullough makes too many wrong calls from dummy half and whilst his defence workload is high – it is poor quality. The problem is their forward pack and the Coach must know this – the natural leaders – Hannant and Parker – both need to fire for the Bronco’s to be able to compete against the top sides for the full 80 mins.

Hodges is still gaining peak fitness after his hamstring injury – Lockyer is the Broncos – and as he prepares for his last finals series – every fan is dreaming the fairy tale ending.

All finals are won when the forward pack dominates – and the Broncos’s have had two cracks at teams above them on the ladder and fell well short both times … it will take something special for them to progress deep into the FInals series – the prediction is a top four finish – a win the first week and then let the dream reveal all …
