More evidence of Ministerial ‘hip-tootin’-shootin” – by the Australian Treasurer …

… all he needs is the bandito mask and he becomes the grim reaper …

Thought of the Day: …
Desperate men do desperate things – what is the reason the Australian Treasurer has push himself to the extremes of political posturing on debates he cannot win …

T he following story is a fine example of how Politicians make statements that are presented as ‘a promise’ that they have no real understanding of how they can be implemented – how they can be costed – and how over time the comment is made to look outlandishly stupid by the person who made the statement. This statement today by the Australian Treasurer is one of those statements.

ABC NewsA story from the ABC – 12th Jun 2011:

Pensioners get payment boost under carbon tax

The Government will also make an immediate rise in the indexation of pensions when the tax is introduced next year. (AAP)

The Federal Government will permanently boost payments to Australia’s 3.4 million pensioners, including up-front cash compensation to cover the cost of price rises under the carbon tax.

The Government also plans to make an immediate rise in the indexation of pensions when the tax is introduced in July next year.

Climate Change Minister Greg Combet says the Government will provide permanent assistance for pensioners.

“We will make sure that pensioners have got more money right from the start of the carbon price and the assistance that we provide will be permanent,” he said.

Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan says he cannot confirm how much pension payments will increase because the exact details of the carbon price have not yet been decided.

But Mr Swan says it is important to assist pensioners.

“What we’ve said is we will provide assistance to pensioners over and above their normal indexation,” he said.

“As you know we’re still drawing up the design of the scheme. When that is available all of those figures will be there for people to see.”

Mr Combet says details of the assistance for households will be announced in the next few months.

An Australian Energy Market Commission report has warned that household electricity costs are set to rise up to 30 per cent by mid-2013.

The report found the Government’s plan to have 20 per cent of electricity from renewable sources by 2020 will contribute 11 per cent to the price rise.

I ask –

  • With the computer modelling dependent of the variables that control the baseline calculations – how do they factor and cater for economic disasters like the GFC into their variables?
  • If another economic shockwave happens – does that mean – ‘all bets are off’ – that  other areas of the economy become a priority and previous undertakings become lost in the ensuring re-allocations?
  • Also, what happens when change-over of Governments come in and apply their own tweaking to the variables and change the modelling outcomes –

How do pensioners fare in these scenarios?

Mr SWAN has lost all creditability in recent months – or perhaps his past creditability was measured of the back of the now retired head of  Treasury – Mr Ken Henry – [ who has now been re-hired as the personal economic adviser to the PM] – or Mr Lindsay Tanner as minister for Finance – who stood down at the 2010 election – or the previous PM Mr Rudd – dumped as as the Prime Minister in June 2010 –

Perhaps these men were the reasons his then unknown shortcomings were never exposed.

Examples of Mr Swan’s free fall in creditability terms is there for all to see –

  • His misguided explanations for the $8 billion budget tax revenue black hole that prompted measures in spending cuts –
  • His frantic attempts to sell the CARBON TAX computer modelling farce – all turning very quickly into a ‘full mental jacket’ position –
  • His attempts to introduce a Mining Rent Resource Tax at a time when the appreciation of the A$ had knocked A$100 billion off export revenues over the last two-three years –
  • And now we have him and Mr Combet making outlandish statements the guarantee and make up front payments to Pensioners to compensate for the Carbon Tax as reported in the above story –

“We will make sure that pensioners have got more money right from the start of the carbon price and the assistance that we provide will be permanent,”

and then in the same interview he makes the comment –

“As you know we’re still drawing up the design of the scheme. When that is available all of those figures will be there for people to see.”

When will Politicians stop making promises they know they cannot keep – they know their hollowness and used them deliberately to give the electorate some peace of mind … to have them pacified and comatosed – designed to brainwash them into believing that the Government has some idea what their doing – and that their interests will be taken care of.

Who does retrospective work to see how far the pensioner group have fallen behind in the ‘cost of living’ equation on the last 20 odd years?

Mr SWAN and Mr Combet should be made to eat these words when the time comes that proves these comments to be as hollow and ‘on the nose’ as the Leadership of the ALP is at the moment.
